okay, people! who is with me on this one? i am feeling a little nervous about all those slides! i'm looking forward to meeting everyone in this course!

i will gather up any useful sites i find in the last med micro club and elsewhere and put them in this post!

here's a start ..

some sites from fall 05 club:

Help! I'm confused....

What is a broth and slant? I know broth is liquid and the slant is on a slant in the test tube. What exactly is its purpose??

You will inoculate these with bacteria and then watch how the bacteria grow in these differnt media

In a broth you will see bacterial growth on the bottom of the test tube

, when you shake the test tube it will turn cloudy.

On a slant you will see bacterial growth on the surface of the solid media.

The reason they pour it at an angle is to give more surface space.

We did 4 things, a slant, a broth, a stab and a streak plate....the purpose of the exercise is to show you different ways of bacterial growth so that you are able to recognize what it is supposed to look like when you have correctly inoculated media with bacteria.

Jen7393, I'm so sorry to hear of your losses over Christmas! You are doing very well to be getting such a great mark! I haven't checked in for a while either .. just busy!

I have a Nutrition midterm this afternoon and I don't know the material so it should be interesting. It's one of those distance courses and I've really put things off. Ah well.

Microbiology class is in about 45 minutes so I'd better get my buns in gear!

Take care, everyone! I will be back soon! We have a Micro exam in one week! ARGH!

Good to see you, now go and grow something good in Micro lab :chuckle

What have you guys done so far in that class. We just observed motility of proKaryotes and eukaryotes under BRAND new microscopes! It's hard stuff but fun stuff at the same time, teacher is good.

Thanks, Stpauligirl. Now I understand! She was going soooo fast in our first lab class I was getting all confused.

I am so glad you understood what I tried to say :) I am not always the best in putting things into words.

Ask anytime I will be more than happy to help. What book are you using. We use Tortora 8th ed. Intro to Microbiology

You'll get it, it's all new and it's like learning a new language!

I'm using the same book. It's soooo boring. She's great in class but when it comes to lab you're pretty much on your own. I need hand holding! :chuckle I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions soon.

I'm also taking Organic Chem which somehow seems a little easier to me. But it's only been 1 week.

Good luck with Organic Chem, I had a horrible teacher and only made a B :crying2: Knowledge of it will help you in micro.

We did chapter 1, 3, are currently in 4 and then go on to 12. First test after that:p She does a great powerpoint presentation and gives us notes which are very much in sync with the book. We have a 10 question quizz each time in lab :crying2:

Keep in touch and good luck

Ugh. We have a term paper in my Micro. Anyone else? My topic is necrotizing fasciitis. Should be interesting, I guess. I probably should be researching that right now instead of being on here...

But... we examined the Petri dishes from last Wednesday. My team did a door knob and a sink handle. Those were disgusting! We also started the Winogradsky column, which should be pretty interesting.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Yuck, necrotizing fascitis sounds like something deadly, dead or dying

We have the opportunity to earn extra credit by submitting articles which we write a page about. 5 articles per test. Each article is worth one point for a total of 5 extra points. 20 extra points per semester, not bad. But looking for appropriate articles is quite a task. Some of these suckers are 30 pages long and so difficult to read and decipher.....all the interesting one's are not long enough. They havae to be 3 pages miminum without pics.

I've been off to a good start and did well on the two lab quizzes. Making an A in this class will be hard though. Good luck with those dead things :lol2:

It's actually a bacterial infection that *can* destroy skin. Amputations are sometimes needed, and I think about a third of the patients actuallly die from this. Scary stuff.

Sounds interesting, hopefully like many terrible bacterial infections it's treatable with antibiotics. Good luck with your studies and paper :)
