Pre-Nursing Major, Spanish Minor?

I'm almost done with my freshman year of college and was thinking about taking up a minor in Spanish for my sophomore year. I know that being fluent in a language other than English will be very helpful in finding jobs once I graduate college. Would anyone reccomend this?

I have worked with a few nurses that minored in Spanish. It was very helpful for them. Depending on your hospital, you may even be able to be paid a little extra if you agree to become a Certified Medical Interpreter. If you have time and it works in your schedule, I would definitely recommend a Spanish minor

It's definitely a good idea! Since you have already finished your freshman year though, I'm assuming it will take longer than 1 year to complete the minor. So if you plan on being in a nursing program in a year I wouldn't add any more classes onto your schedule that will already be very difficult. Maybe you can finish the Spanish classes in the summers? Or just take as many as you can. It will help to just even take Spanish 1 and 2.

Do it while you have the chance. Even if it takes you only 1 extra year (not a long time realistically). Totally worth it IMO.

During my undergrad I had the chance to add a minor in business management and I didn't do it because I was in a hurry to graduate. I totally regret it. I got a job and ended up being a manager and then a sales trainer in my field so I personally feel I could have earned that minor and it may have helped me earn a higher salary over the years.

That being said, a 2nd language is HUGE when it comes to nursing. Do not pass up this opportunity. You could speak the language naturally or just have taken a few classes, but it only looks even better in the form of a degree. It's a competitive job market and it may be the one thing that sets you apart from an equally qualified Spanish speaking candidate.

Definitely! It will be a huge plus to you in your career opportunities. I took French in high school and college and I have no plans to move to Canada or anywhere French is spoken...sure its nice to read a book or fashion magazine with some French word thrown in and understand what it means, but Spanish would have been far more beneficial in the workforce. So many positions prefer bilingual and ability to communicate in Spanish.

I started my minor this spring semester january. At my school we have to take a placement test to determine what level of spanish you will be placed in. I took up to spanish 3 in high school. Although it has been a year siince i've taken spanish, I went and took the test. surprisingly I was placed in level 4. so I am in spanish 4 right now. I will be done in two more semesters.
