Pre-Nursing Awaiting Core Classes and Job Hunting!

Published

I was wondering if anyone out there is in the same boat as I am or have been and now have experience on how I can get through it! At the end of May I finished all of my prerequisite courses, as well as the HESI and am now considered a Nursing Program Candidate! My school works on a first come first serve basis as long as you finish all pre req classes and meet the GPA qualifications. I have been told I have about a year before there will be room for me so I have begun a job search to save up before I get terribly busy with clinicals. I have good grades 3.4 GPA, I made an overall 92 on the HESI and I worked as a receptionist in a Veterinary Practice for 2.5 years yet I seem to be having the hardest time getting a job in the human healthcare field.

I have put in endless applications for jobs I know that I qualify for at the three local hospitals in my area as well as countless other doctors offices. I have not gotten any response other than automated emails saying that another more qualified candidate has received the position and feel free to apply for another opening. I have tried clerical as well as entry level hands on positions. When I have gone to the HR offices all dressed up with resume in hand (on professional paper even! ) I get sent out the door with my resume and told to check my email for application status. Does anyone have advice as to how I can get in the door? I know that I have a great work ethic and great references at my old job, as well as a current medical education in progress. What am I doing wrong? Why can I not even get someone to speak to me? What position did you start out in?

Sounds like you're doing everything right as far as applying for jobs. Are you able to volunteer at any of these hospitals so you can network and get to know the staff? You could get volunteer experience and then that might help your chances or you could even ask around for the names and contact info of department managers so you can bypass HR. The main thing is to not give up. Good luck to you!
