Pre Admission Essay

I was wondering if anyone could critique my essay for pre admission. The admissions office wants a 1-2 page essay on what our nursing and educational goals are. Thanks

There are several reasons that I want to go back to school to get my Bachelor of Science in Nursing and become a registered nurse.

Over the years I have excelled in jobs ranging from sales and customer service, to research and marketing. While there were a lot of things I loved about working in those positions, I never really felt like I could make any of those jobs my lifelong career.

My desire to become a nurse comes from my innate ability to thrive in a stressful, fast-paced environment. I know that nursing is challenging and can oftentimes push nurses to their physical and mental limits. I am eager and excited to become a part of this lifestyle.

I love face-to-face interaction with others. Becoming a nurse will afford me the opportunity to not only interact with others, but also advocate for them. I know that I will be helping people who may be under a lot of stress, upset, and scared. Since nurses are usually the first and last point of contact for a patient, I realize that my actions will determine how the patient views the health care facility as well as the nursing professional. I am prepared for the challenges and rewards this will bring.

I consider myself a lifetime student. Learning is something that never ends. I enjoy learning new skills and applying what I've learned to better my life and the lives of others. I graduated high school with high honors. I went to a very good university, held a part-time job, was a member of a distinguished fraternity, and graduated in four years. In retrospect, I could have gotten better grades. But what I learned about myself and how to live as a productive member of society is something grades will never show. I feel that the grades in my prerequisite classes I am taking now, over ten years later, will demonstrate that I have the desire and mental ability to succeed academically.

After I graduate and become a registered nurse, I hope to work in an Emergency Room, Operating Room or Intensive Care Unit. However, I will gladly work wherever my services are needed. Regardless of the location, I will be doing what I have set out to do, be of service.

Eventually, I would like to get an advanced degree in nursing, and become a Family Nurse Practitioner. I plan on working as a registered nurse while pursing the Master of Science in Nursing.

My ultimate goal is to have the ability and means to donate some of my time and expertise to provide quality health care for people who cannot afford it. I believe everyone deserves access to health care, even if they don't have the means to provide it.

Finally, one day I plan on taking care of my parents, when they are no longer able to take care of themselves. When my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer, he lived the last few weeks of his life in my parent's house, around people that loved him. I watched the way my parents and hospice nurses took care of my grandpa, until he passed away. I want to be able to do the same for my parents, with the added knowledge and experience that comes with being a registered nurse.

Your essay is so good you should not have posted it. I would not be surprised to see this exact essay turned in at nursing schools around the country!

An essay can perform some of the same functions as a job interview. It can help determine if the applicant is capable of organizing and presenting their thoughts (whatever they are) in a coherent fashion.
