Post-OP below the knee amputation

Posted

Has 8 years experience.

How do you position a post-op below the knee amputation. Do you have them sit high fowlers? semi? I was told in lecture that you place them on their abdomen BUT she wasn't sure. Does anyone know for sure?

Post-op BKA should be placed in the prone position every 3 to 4 hours for 20 to 30 minute periods to prevent hip flexion contractures, otherwise I don't think it really matters.

One of our doc's wants the extremity elevated on a pillow and another does not.

Hope this helped.
