It does state it in the curriculum you need this amount of RN hours, but with the economy right now, they are willing to wave that into the later 3 clinical semesters during the FNP portion.
Ah yes, this is what I was wondering about. What if you can't get an RN position to satisfy those hours for the curriculum? It seems a lot of people are having a hard enough time finding a regular RN position. With hiring freezes all over what would make a hospital want to train us when they know we are going to move on later?

Willmak: I am currently in the semester where we are supposed to be having 200 hours ( I think..we're the only school in norcal that has the most clinical hours)as a RN and only 2 FNP students have found full time positions. The only accommodating hospital to students had been UCD, so it is unfortunate they will not hire anyone anymore without a BSN and/or MSN. But, some of the FNP students ahead of us told us that some of the FNP clinicals site are precepting for hire. Also, I think those hourse we work at the clinic will be considered as our RN hours. Hopefully, by the time you guys get done, all this healthcare reform will have been resolved. I remember one clinical faculty (FNP alumni of SMU) said she wished she didn't work as a RN (for less that a year) while in school because she could have spent more time focusing on her studies, husband, and kids. She actually told me that if she had to it over again she would have not worked as a RN when she was in school because she feels she is an excellent FNP and the skills she learned as RN in a acute setting is something you don't carry over as a FNP

BUt, obviously, everyone has to come to that decision. Some may feel they need to be a RN for a couple years in an acute setting before they can be a FNP and some feel it is not necessarily a predictor of FNP success.

Wow! I was in the process of moving and I missed a lot of links! Thank you so much Erik, WillMak, wishing2beanRN, and everyone else for your discussions. I guess I'm just looking at getting my phone call first before I worry about the future. But thank you for bringing up future concerns.
Good Luck to all of us that haven't heard from SMU yet.

    Hi,
It's very late in the game but I finally found this forum. Hi Will and Erik, I met you at the FNP interviews - my name is Stephanie. (Will, I'm the nutri sci major.... we talked a lot about your current job working with adolescents). All of your posts have been really helpful... there are definitely pros and cons for both entry level masters and bachelor programs. I was placed #2 on the waitlist and was fantastically disappointed but I was told by Liza that in the past samuel merrit has accepted about 8 students from the waitlist. There are no guarantees but I hope to see you both in the spring. Have you both accepted your early acceptance offers?

Hi Stephanie! Sounds like you definitely have a great chance of joining us in Jan. Best of luck to you! I accepted my offer as I think did Will. I thought about trying for another school that could save me some $, but nothing really works for my situation. Keep us posted! Cheers, Erik
