Online MSN programs for RN's with a BS in another field

Hi all!

I am an RN that has been working on a medical floor for about 6 months. I have a BS in Kinesiology and completed an accelerated RN program (13 months straight through). I am now considering continuing my education. I am thinking along the lines of RN to MSN, but may be open to a BSN program as well, although the MSN is more appealing since I already have one Bachelors degree already. I was wondering if anyone has information on online programs that are RN to MSN? How long they usually take, good programs, if they require a certain amount of experience first etc? I'm basically looking for the most efficient way to continue my education. I am 25 with no husband or children so I would like to buckle down and do school now before I start a family etc. Any information would be appreciated!!

Probably the best thing to do would be to check out the websites of the schools/programs you're interested in to see what they require.

Hello,

You can try Walden University and see if they can help you. I have and ADN nursing and a BT in electrical engineering technology and I am currently in waldens MSN progran. I actually had no problem getting into the MSN program with my non nursing bachelors.

I went to University of Phoenix online, I had to complete 9 upper nursing credits and moved on to the MSN program. I believe has one too. The question to ask is if they have a bridge program.

You also need to make sure they are nationally accredited, so that your final degree will be accepted no matter where you apply to work. I say this because there are some programs that are not and you may spend your money and end up with a degree that won't allow you to practice at the level you hope to. Or you may find that when you decide to return to school for a DNP/DNSc/PhD that your degree will not transfer to those programs.

Cal State Dominguez Hills. CSUDH.edu. They have a pathway program I completed in May. I have a BA in psych, an ADN, and now an MSN. Good program, reasonably priced and fully accredited. I don't know if they will be admitting mid year due to the budget cuts. It may not be too late to start this month!

How many classes total are you going to have to take to get the MSN? I am in the same situation, BA in a diff field, with an ADN. Thanks!

I think it ended up being almost 40 units. It took me 3 1/2 years. The reason for all of the units is that a lot of the MSN courses require the prereq BSN courses (ex. pathophysiology before advanced pathophysiology). It was a long haul, but I am glad I did it. I love teaching and it prepared me well. I also now have my public health nurse certificate which is nice.
