Any UCSF Mepn Applicants?

Nursing Students Post Graduate

Published

Hi everyone--

Has anyone else out there applied to the UCSF MEPN program? They're supposed to send out letters this month (December) for the interview process. Has anyone gotten a letter yet? Will those that aren't asked to the interview process get a rejection letter now?

Crossing my fingers...!

Letters haven't arrived in Portland, OR either.

I shouldn't care since I've already decided on Yale.

But, I don't want the wounded ego if it's a no. Maybe I will recycle it unopened (lol, like I could do that).

Jenn,

I'm on the same boat with you :D I mailed in my deposit a few days ago; but then again I'm still curious to find out if I got in to UCSF or not! LOL.

Got the letter today! I'm alternate #3 for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner specialty.

I'm not sure why I'm so happy, but this just made me feel a lot better since I have paid my $600 deposit at Yale for the very same specialty.

Good news for the alternate #4 though (if there's any). You just moved up one spot, because I declined my wish to be put on the alternate list :nuke:

Good luck, everyone! :yeah:

Got mine yesterday! I got into the midwifery program! I'm actually really shocked because I was told that they pretty much don't want to take midwifery track students who aren't competent Spanish speakers. I'd pretty much told myself from the beginning that this round was a trial run.

I have a lot of thinking to do this weekend.

Don't you two have the same specialty? Aren't you both midwifery?

KEEP US UPDATED Jennifer MPH!

Congratulations Kev. I knew you would do well. Maybe I'll see you at Yale next year, when I am ready to apply again. I have several schools in mind this time :) Good luck let me know how things go. I want to ask you how did you write your personal letter any advice?

to my fellow ACNP applicants who applied to both UCSF and Yale's programs, what do you think of the fact that Yale's curriculum gives students 970 clinical hours while UCSF gives a minimum of 540? I emailed Roxanne Garbez, the director of the ACNP program at UCSF and she said that most do around 600-700 hours but there have been students who've done a rare max of 800-900. Frankly, I'm shocked there's such a difference between the two programs in terms of clinical hours. That makes Yale much more attractive in my opinion but any other opinions on this?

Well, aside from UCSF having the top reputation in the country, I think that the fact that we have to "step out" of the program for a year to work in med/surg or in the ER gives us an experiential advantage as far as the Master's Entry goes.... Long ago, one of my professors told me that school, no matter where you go or what the name is, is only what you make of it. I still believe in that philosophy. I think that UCSF is cutting edge, and I think that if we want to continue our education beyond MSNs (as I do) then we are in absolutely the right place. But we have to decide for ourselves, and shortcake, if you like Yale more, I'm sure there are people on the waiting list who would jump at the chance to take your spot.... (and that's coming from someone who's had over 4000 clinical hours working with patients, nearly 6000... not including her wilderness EMT time). So, it's a personal decision I think, at this point. I'm comfortable with my experience, but then again, I've had direct patient care and a very solid science foundational education for the past decade. Others might not be so comfortable. ?? I can't say what's right for one or the other, but I know I'm excited to attend UCSF, and I will take advantage of whatever is offered to me.

I completely agree. Any program is what one makes of it. Both Yale and UCSF are well regarded programs. If one is accepted at both and one feels that Yale is the better option - then one should pack one's bags and head to New Haven.

Yes, Star77 --

JenniferMPH and I are in the same specialty...thanks for lookin' out.

JenniferMPH --no pressure:bowingpur and as far as egos go, you should be extremely pleased with yourself for already getting into an amazing program. Ego schmiego.

All the best!
