Possible Relocation to Atlanta area!!!???

Published

Hi all, I am currently enrolled in a BSN program in TN and will be graduating next August 2012! I know this is a little early to be thinking about relocating, but I just like to plan ahead! So here's the run down...I know the nursing market is tight pretty much everywhere, but I really want a change of scenery and why not do that with my new career!? Now it's safe to say that I wouldn't have too much trouble finding a job where I am (Memphis,Tn) with the different connections I've made at various hosiptals throughout the city, but I just really really want to branch out and try out another city! So I've done some research and narrowed down my choices to the Atlanta area and a few other southern cities! What I really want to know is where are the best hospitals to work in the area that are friendly to new grads and the best areas to live! Ideally I would love to work in a hospital close to where I would be living because I know the traffic in Atlanta is BANANAS, but I am willing to commute up to an hour, work nights, and don't mind starting out on a med-surg floor! I KNOW IT WILL BE DIFFICULT TO LAND A JOB IN THE Atlanta area, BUT NOT IMPOSSIBLE! :) So let me have it....the good, the bad, and the ugly!

P.S. I would NEVER move without a job contract in hand!:D

Northside is a good place to work. They have a few branches and from what I can tell, are pretty good about hiring new grads. Also, Wellstar has a New Nurse Residency they do, and they seriously only want to hire BSN's because they are trying to get magnet status.

If you dont want to live in Atlanta. the Kennesaw/Marietta area is about 30 miles north of it, and is a pretty good place to live.

There are TONS of other hospitals, but I can't testify to any of the others!

Thanks for the info!

It's totally doable to live in the city in a nice place on a nurses salary. I work at Emory, which is really amazing. As a new grad, though, I'm really glad I started at Atlanta Medical Center. Like Grady Medical, it's down and dirty. You're overworked and underpaid, but if you can hack it there, you can hack it anywhere.

That's good too know because I was a little worried that I may not be able to live in the city on a nurses salary! Thanks.

Oh, absolutely. And I'm not talking about a studio apartment. You can get a nice apartment, or even a small house with a yard in great areas if you know where to look. If you find a position, I'm sure there are plenty of people here, myself included, who can give you pointers.

Thanks a bunch! I'm going start researching different areas to live now so I can get a feel for where on want to stay. I've visited atlanta several times and I stayed mainly in the Buckhead area(pretty pricey:uhoh3:) and my aunt lives in McDonough(a little far out lol) so I'm looking for a happy medium! What areas would you suggest?

Depends on what you're looking for. Check out the map on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhoods_of_Atlanta

If you're looking for cute, fun areas, I like East Atlanta, Inman Park, Candler Park, Virginia Highlands, Druid Hills, Morningside, downtown Decatur and Emory. Ormewood, Grant Park, Reynoldstown, Edgewood, Cabbagetown, and Old Fourth Ward can be a touch dicey, but are in the process of gentrification, and very cute. I've never lived outside the perimeter, or west of 75/85, so someone else may be able to give you more info on those areas.

There are new grad friendly hospitals in Atlanta? Interesting.....I might have to broaden my search a bit. I lived there for a summer internship and loved it!

It was a while back, but I know some of my graduating classmates went to Grady, Atlanta Medical Center, Piedmont, and Northside. I know my ICU at Emory has hired several new grads over the past year.

So hospitals in Atlanta are actually hiring new grads?
