Plz Help!! Nurse from HK want to take NCLEX and work in CALIFORNIA

Published

Hi there,

I am a RN from Hong Kong. I have done a lot of searching about taking NCLEX for working in California. Yet my situation is a bit different. I am still very confused and hopeless. I hope you guys can read my story and give some suggestions for me.

I know that SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER is a must in getting authority to test in NCLEX and getting a license in California. My boyfriend is US citizen currently living in Oakland and we are planning to marry very soon. That's why I want to work in California as RN.

In this case, I will be given a ssn after we married and go through the immigration process.

However, I dont know how long will it take. I just cant stand sitting here in Hong Kong and doing nothing prepared. An idea has come out of my mind that actually can I take NCLEX exam from another state like Texas which does not require SSN. Get license from Texas. And then when I immigrated to US and gain a SSN from California, I transfer my Texas License to California.

Is it possible ? Indeed I was really messed up. Thankyou very much for your help !

Unfortunately you can not endorse as easily to CA like you think. CA do their own assessment so once you have US SSN they will still require you to submit application as if a new application regardless on having a RN license in another state

As mentioned, it doesn't make any sense to go to take the NCLEX in one state then try to endorse it over to your real desired state since you'll have to meet the desired state's minimum requirements. Why pay double non refundable application fees, pay for unneeded evaluations and waste more of your valuable time waiting for results (from English proficiencies and course reviews)?

Getting any out of state RN license is not an automatic pass nor is it guaranteed it can be quickly endorsed into CA.

One important concern is whether or not, your BSN degree will meet the CA BRN requirements, as HK follows the UK system and those coming with the UK degree usually fall short of certain courses (most likely OB, Peds and Psych but can entail other missing courses or lack of clinical hours) and requires further studies in CA before being granted the ATT.

You may wish to see if your school's transcripts dept. knows of some grads or nurses that recently (within the past year) were given the ATT.

Hello,

I am RN from Hong Kong and moved to Bay Area since Jan 2015. I had the similar situation as yours, I married to my husband who is US citizen in 2013 and after 2 years going through all immigration process I finally could get the green card and SSN.

A few years ago, I had the same situation as you. I did a lot of research on NCLEX and RN licensing in California, I did think about apply other states which does not require SSN to apply for the exam, this is also suggested by Boarding of Nursing CA. HOWEVER, I asked some of my friends who are RN in California, they all said NO! DON'T DO THAT, it is just wasting your time and money. They are right. After going through everything, I applied for the exam in Board of Nursing CA in Jun 2015, and it takes time for the board to review your nursing school curriculum, after 4 months, I finally got the ATT (Authorisation to test) and I don't need to take any courses here, THANK GOD! I already scheduled NCLEX coming April.

If you have any questions, you can feel free contact me.

Hi Sukyayu,

I am RN also from HK and going through same procedure with BRN. They have some issues regarding my HK nursing school curriculum.

I am really worry if I will be denied and need to resit in school again. I have been tortured by CGFNS CVS for 1 yr that's why I turn to Cali...

I wonder if I can contact you in private for further details.
