I am in my last semester of nursing school and am just a few months shy of graduating. I have been assigned to a PRN for my preceptorship in MedSurg. She's a wonderful teacher but the problem is she keeps getting called off of work on the nights that I'm scheduled to be with her. They won't allow me to have a fill in preceptor when this happens and with the remaining schedule I'm gonna be 2 shifts short of my requirements (assuming she doesn't get called off anymore). Can anyone please offer some advice or suggestions as my instructor is aware of the call offs but only says "Ok" when I inform her. I don't want to fail because of something this silly, it's really frustrating.

Go to your advisor if your instructor is not responding appropriately. Is she aware that you'll be short some hours as a consequence? If not, tell her. If she is aware and is apathetic, go above her. Good luck.

Wow! At my hospital, an RN precepting a capstone student is immune from low census days. We MIGHT have to float (taking the student along for the ride) but we always get to work. This has the added benefit of 'encouraging' folks to precept during our slow season (summer)

I would email in an attempt to get it in writing that your clinical hours this semester might be finished late to verify that they are aware.
