Please help, call in sick for morning or go in?

I am not sure what to do. I am going in to my third week of orientation on a new and harder unit (lots of learning). I had the weekend off, but today have been sneezing and sniffling/runny nose, and sore throat. It is tolerable for ME, but I do feel a little tired/foggy. Wondering what the policy is regarding this...what I should do. I also don't want to "look bad" by calling in sick so early into my new unit.

I would go in and just let you're sup know what's up and your symptoms...they may choose to send you home but that way you're covered.

Most likley they do have a policy about it. I would call in (talk to oc health if you have one) tell them what you've said here and let them decide. I called in sick twice on orientation (not a great start I know). The first time I had a 24h bug but according to thier policy had to stay out for 5 days. The other time I was in a car accdent and could make it in. They were understanding and even called to make sure I was ok.

If your coughing alot and spreading your germs then you dont want to put your pt at risk.

Thanks for the replies. I have to be there at 7 a.m., so I have to make the judgement call now (staffing not open). Also, if I call in now, it would let them better prepare unit staffing for the morning, so my preceptor can get her own assignment, ect. Actually now that I think about it, I am not feeling very peppy....but am scared to call in at this point.

Who answers the phone? A supervisor? Let them decide. How is the facility with call ins? Strict? Easy going? I would weigh those options and decide.

Um are you really that sick here you feel like you absolutely can't work, or you just don't feel good?

If you are really that sick, it is a no-brainer, CALL IN! :)

I wonder if any other professionals have this much anxiety over calling in sick :/

Well, I called in. Just not feeling well. It would have been a hell day with not feeling well, and learning, and preceptor, ect. Plus, don't want to spread cold germs around the unit.

Don't make anyone else sick

Febrile? How sneezy, how sniffly?

Who do you call into? Call them, tell them your story, and see if they think you should come in.

It's probably better NOT to go in.

When in doubt, I call in. If I go to work, I know they're going to expect 110% from me whether I feel OK or not. I do try to call at least 8 hours before my scheduled shift, but I'll call in with less notice if I have to.

I work in a no call in facility. If u need to call in, u have to find ur own replacement unless u or a family number are literally dying or you gotta be there.
