Hi. Due to financial concerns, I still have not begun to pursue informatic roles or schooling, but I do wonder are hospitals the only places that nurse informaticists work. I do not work in a hospital. I work for a private firm where we are heavy into data analytics. Even though I continue to read trade magazines, my hands-on-nursing experience is not recent. Do I need to return to the hospital to relearn clinical so that I can legitimately get into informatics? Can I work in informatics outside of the hospital setting? I believe I have run across a few jobs that are not in the hospital but these jobs are very few. Any insignts would be great.

Greetings Mijourney! Long time no e-speak!
The practice setting for an informatics nurse is definately NOT limited to the acute care/hospital environment. Whether or not you need to refresh your clinical nursing skills will depend on what the job requires. There are NI roles working for HIT software vendor's, in home health agencies, as consultants, for goverment, regulatory, health insurance organizations and physician practices........ to name just a few. Some hiring managers/organizations may want you to have "past clinical practice experience" while other positions require "recent clincal practice experience" .......it will depend on the role expectations.
