PICCs

Just a question, I know that with peripheral IVs with continuous fluid infusions, tubing is changed q 72 hours at most hospitals. Is this the same if the person has a PICC line inserted (or is the tubing for fluids changed more frequently??)

Thanks!

I believe its the same.

It's the same for IV tubing, but you should change the PICC line cap(s) everytime you aspirate blood from the line (at least that is our facility's policy). I love PICC lines :)

You should hang all new tubings when you start using a new PICC. Otherwise, my facility policy is to change q72h, same as a peripheral IV.

Facility policy where I"m at, change q 96 hrs, no difference between PIV and PICC

Our facility is q96h as well regardless of PICC, PIV, or CVL. Keep in mind TPN and some gtts (propofol) are changed q24h.

Good point. Although, where I worked propofol was changed q12h, along with lipids

Proves the importance of being familiar with your individual facility's policies.

Our policy:

if PIV change q72h

PICC tubing change q48h

TPN/Lipids change q24h

Best thing to do is check you policies at your hospital to be safest. Our policy is 72hrs but in our oncology unit it is 24hrs.
