Physiology & Chemistry the same semester?

Published

Hello, fellow Allnurses peeps! I was wondering if it's a good idea to take Physiology and Intro to Chemistry the same semester? I have NEVER taken a chemistry class in my life. Not even in HS. The only chem experience I have is 1 chapter in Biology. Any tips? Thanks!

Based on your lack of experience with chemistry, I would advise no. But, if you are very strong in math, and have strong study skills and the time to devote to extra work, you might convince yourself to try things out. You can always sign up for both, then drop one of the classes before the drop without a W date should it look like too much.

I would say, No.

My personal advice: In fact, I'd highly recommend you take and pass your Intro to Chemistry class and then the regular Chemistry class (or whatever the prerequisite chemistry class it is you need for pre-nursing) first before attempting Anat, Phys, or Micro. Why, you may ask? Every single one of those classes has chemistry in it in some way, shape, or form. Anatomy, not so much but the others definitely do.

You'll have a smoother ride in your core science classes if you understand what's going on chemically inside the body. In fact, Physiology has tons of chemistry going on and chances are you may not comprehend it as well if you had not already taken chemistry.

I took both A&P 1 and 2 before taking any of my chemistry classes and I did fine. They don't really have much in common but of course it does help to have a chemistry base so that you have a better understanding, but it's not dire. I think you will be able to handle it if you are prepared for a difficult semester with two sciences. However, I took my A&P classes with no other sciences because I was so scared of them and I don't regret that decsision.

I did both at the same time and I got through it.

In my university A&P 1 and Chemistry were taken 1st semester freshman year. It was not an option to take them separately, both were only offered in fall semester.
