The poor passing rate in the latest Nursing Licensure Examination is a reflection of how far the quality of nursing education has gone down in the Philippines.
I am a nurse preceptor here in the San Francisco Bay Area and I know first hand that many of the recent nursing graduates from the Philippines need more training than the earlier generation of nurses from the Philippines. This is sad because Filipino nurses used to be regarded as to have received high quality of training back in the Philippines. I hope that the Philippine government will close those poorly performing schools of nursing in the Philippines as soon as possible.
The latest news I read over the intenet is that there are now 200,000 unemployed nurses in the Philippines. This is mind boggling, so many will not realize their dreams of working as nurses in the Philippines or abroad.
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, RNs can earn as much as $100,000 or more per year in acute care hospitals, but due to the recession, very few hospitals are hiring nurses. There is actually a temporary glut of nurses here right now, therefore U.S. hospitals are not recruiting foreign nurses as often and in as many numbers as they used to.
