Performing Lipodissolve Procedure

Published

I am a newly licensed LVN in TX and I work at a weight loss clinic. I was hired to preform the following tasks: Obtain patient history, take VS, draw blood and administer EKGs and injections. The injections are: Vit B12, Lipo Forte, Levocarnitine, 7KG (DHEA), and Biotin. I was asked to perform a procedure called Lipodissolove which is advertised to break up fat in the area that it is being injected into. The injection is composed of two ingredients: deoxycholate and phosphatidylcholine. I have researched them both and found that individually they have both been used as injections for dissolving fat. In that research I have also read that when phosphatidylcholine is compounded and used as an injection it is considered an unapproved drug rather than a dietary supplement. The FDA says "There are currently no FDA-approved drugs for injection for fat elimination. FDA cannot assure the safety and efficacy of these types of drugs". I have tried to find information related to this for my state specifically as well as what the NPA says about licensed nurses performing this type of procedure. I like the job that I was hired to do and I do not feel comfortable doing this extra procedure. Protecting my nursing license is my top priority and I don't want to do anything to jeopardize that. Do any of you have information on this or have you had any experience with it. Anything helpful would be appreciated. Thanks.

And where are they getting the compounded med from? Must be an "approved" pharmacy I believe. Especially in view of what happened with contaminated compounded meds recently.

All of the meds given there come compounded from the same pharmacy but I've never really paid attention to the name of it.

Oh, I don't think this would fall under the practice of nursing. Just my opinion, but I don't care how much you like this job -- when the "clinic" gets shut down for bad things happening, your license will be scrutinized.

Hope you have . You may have need of the attorney they'll provide you.

Uhhh I'd run not walk my butt out of there..
