There are a few things you will need to consider. First, look at how Texas regulates nurse midwives and decide if you are comfortable with their requirements. For instance, in my state, only a certified nurse midwife can attend home births, and all midwives must work under an OB with a signed collaborative agreement. Next, you need to consider what level of schooling you want to obtain. Do you want to be a CM? Do you want to be a CNM? For me, that first step looking into the legislation gave me the answer to that question.

You might want to start looking now at midwifery programs. See if there are any local to you. If not, look into online midwifery programs. What each requires of you will be different. Some require time working as an RN before applying to their programs. Some don't. Some require you find your own preceptor. Some don't. It's going to be where your comfort zone is. For me, I wouldn't want my school to choose my preceptor, because if they chose anyone local to me, I'd be in for a miserable two to three years with a hospital that medically manages every single little detail of birth.

Good luck to you!
