Median pay for L&D RNC-OB with 4 years experience

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Published

I am an L&D nurse at a Hospital in Western PA. It's a city hospital in Pittsburgh. I have 4 years experience in High Risk Inpatient OB. I recieved my RNC-OB certification2 years ago and I have my BSN. I was wondering what the average median pay was for a nurse in my specialty with my relative experience and credentials. I checked allpay.com, and my salary was woefully below what the median wage was listed as. And has anyone ever tried to negotiate a raise before? I don't even know how to go about that. I wouldn't even ask, but I am having financial difficulties at the moment, and any little bit extra would certainly help. ANY ADVICE/COMMENTS PLEASE!!!!!

You'd probably have more accurate answers if you posted this question on the PA nurses forum. IME, salary is much more dependent upon the region in which you work than the specialty area.

If you work for UPMC, I would recommend you look into other hospital systems or other cities. Unfortunately they are NOTORIOUS for paying at the lower end of the scale :-(

WAG you are getting less than 60K? the thing is, we are in a depression right now, and have been for your entire working carreer. the only way to leverage up in such times is the same used in better times. you need to hop from job to job every 2-4 years. each time you do you should get 10-20% differential, and may top out within 3-4 moves making 130-150% of what your more "loyal" classmate is making at the same job they graduated into.

abandonment is the most powerful tool we have in any relationship, whether business or personal. to use it best, you "kill the chicken to show the monkey" (shā jī xià hóu, in chinese pinyin). leave an unimportant job on your own terms and clearly for personal advancement and growth and HR people in later, more important jobs will know that you are not to be low balled.

I can tell you that I'm in eastern pa as an RN BSN IBCLC since 2008. I do high risk L&D. If I worked full time at my positron I would be under 49,000/year. Pathetic! I'm very underpaid and that's one of the reasons I'm moving to something new.

I've thought about moving to PA but the pay for RN is very low. I believe CA and NY are the top paying states for RN. I don't mean to brag and please don't take it wrong but I have 2 years of experience and I get over 100k. But then again, living expense in CA is high.

Have you thought about travel nursing? Are you able to relocate? I used to be a Pgh RN, and when I relocated to an area with a higher cost of salary, my annual income increased by over 100%, and I was doing the same type of floor nursing I had done in Pgh.

Even though you may make over 100k you are not living any more different than nurses getting paid less because wages are adjusted according to the high living expenses of CA and NY

The pay is very low here, abnormally low. The cost of living isn't cheap unless you choose to live in the ghettoo....
