Does anyone have any info on Holy Family University Nursing program. I have heard some bad things about them and want to know if anyone had any first hand experiences with this school. I was accepted into a full time nursing school but don't think I will be able to go full time and not work. I am interested in Holy Family part time program. I heard it is very laid back and numerous students who graduated from there are lazy and uneducated. I don't know if this is true or if someone was upset with this particular school. Any info would be greatly appreciated in helping in me in my decision.

Hello-

I am planning to attend Holy Family Nursing School in the fall. I need to work full time so this part time option works for me. The school is accredited and they are selective. One poster on this site indicated that Holy Family nurses are dumb. Personally, I don't know anyone that has attended this program. School is what you make it. If we follow the protocol, show up for class, do the hard work and do well in clinicals and pass the NCLEX exam we will be quality nurses. They have a high NCLEX pass rate you cannot go to the next level of classes until you pass a comprehensive test. I think we will be well prepared. If I find that these classes are not up to par I will transfer but honestly, I think we will be fine there and will still be able to keep our jobs so we can maintain our lifestyle and pay for school. Good luck!!

hi, i am currently awaiting a letter from Holy Fam. Uni to see how many classes i will need to take b4 i start my clinicals. How has your experience been soo far? Were you able to get grants/loans? The pass rate there is excellent and there is a comprehensive exam b4 anyone can move to the next level so i think the school is ok. Is there anyone who is currently attending there who can guide me through the pros and cons..............thanks

any more holyy Fam students out there?...you must be all studying soo hard;)

i just was told by holy fam that i will need to complete language1&2, 1natural science b4 i can start nur102&214..they said religion1&2 can be taken with nursing classes.....looks like clinicals wont be until sept08.........can anyone tell me if they were able to do these classes online at another school? plzz share your experience soo far.

:welcome:How ironic that I happened to stumble across this page. I teach Junior med-surg and other courses at Holy Family University. Holy Family students work hard and are not lazy! If a student is lazy, they don’t pass the Junior med-surg course as we take the approach that the students will be future nurses responsible for people’s lives. They also need to pass NCLEX and we do have a good pass rate! Feedback from employers that hire our graduates is overwhelmingly positive. In prior years the GPA for nursing at Holy Family University was lower. The GPA for acceptance into nursing is now 2.75 and will most likely increase to 3.0. Perhaps some of the earlier students with the lower GPAs may not be the best representatives of Holy Family University, I don’t know. I would advise you to come into a recruitment day, talk to the nursing faculty, and make good choices. Or make an appt to come in and talk on a different day if you need. When you take on any educational program, life-style changes are necessary. It doesn’t matter where you go but you have to be ready to make school a priority, especially when you get into your major. Believe me, I went back to school as an older student and then did an MSN and a PhD. Paying the money doesn’t guarantee success. You get out of a program what you put into it. So, no Holy Family University grads are not lazy. They are eager to learn while in school and excited when they graduate. I have pictures from a ceremony 2 nights ago that would prove it but I can’t post them bc of confidentiality. If you want to be a nurse, do your homework both before you pick your program and then when you are in it. I wish you all the best.

A Holy Family University Faculty Member

Hi, I am a Holy Family grad- December 2006. (Curious as to who Huskylover is!)

Where to begin...

HF in my personal opinion, has a lot of bugs to work out. I found the program lacking in many ways. I have very high standards for myself, and expected the same out of my university. Perhaps that is why I was disappointed. I worked very hard at my classes and graduated with honors, but I honestly felt I had to squeeze every last drop of information from the program. There are many faults in the program that can set a student up for failure if they are not disciplined.

That being said, if you can teach yourself- and you will have to often- then you can find the resources you need to succeed. If you are someone who needs more guidance, or perhaps have been out of the system for an extended period, you many have trouble. I also find that there seems to be a serious disconnect between the perception of the real world vs. the reality of it. As an adult student, I can't tell you how many times I was told that I couldn't work and go to school at the same time, or, as one advisor said during registration to another as if I wasn't there: "I don't who these students think they are that they can take all of these classes and expect to work at the same time" as they shook their heads at each other like they were speaking about an unruly 8 year old. I was 32 years old at the time! And as a responsible adult, I am more than capable of working to pay my mortgage and balancing home/school life at the same time.

I had several of these infuriating encounters over the 3+ years there.

There were several good people on staff, and several who hadn't a clue. I imagine that is the case at any institution. The downside with HF is that the support isn't as strong there for the student.

The bottom line is, I graduated, I forced myself to learn, I utilized outside resources and I made the best of it. I passed my boards with 75 questions and got my dream job within 3 months of graduation.

It can me done if you have the right attitude.

Oh, and their pass rate according to the PA BON is 72% as of September 2007, so I don't consider that great.

Sorry for the downer.

Nursing itself is great and worth the journey though, so hang in there!
