Peds Office then Peds Hospital?

Published

Hi all!

I'm a new grad interested in working in Peds. The slight problem in my plan is that the pediatric hospital where I live is not hiring new grads. I have an interview for a part time RN in a pediatric office. I'm thinking that would give me the experience working with children that the hospital wants. (Generally, they want at least a year of experience in a pediatric area).

Are there any cons to this plan? Does working in an office instead of a hospital put me at a disadvantage in peds even if it's pediatric?

Thanks for any insight! :)

We are in the exact same position!!! i start at a center for pediatric medicine April 18th in hopes to get peds experience for a future pediatric hospital position. Wondering if that would work or not? I know HR/ nurse managers probably look down on clinic experience/duties but its got to be better than nothing right?

I was in the same position, but I chose to get a med surg job for 2 years then had no problem getting job at peds hospital. I now work telephone triage at a busy pediatric office and love it. We are actually looking to now hire RNs, I have a question though, what is the starting wage for a peds clinic?

I think it's important to love what you're doing, and not every step in life needs to be a stepping stone for something else. If this is the opportunity you have now... go for it. Maybe you'll get a hospital job later on. Maybe you'll fall in love with peds clinic. Maybe some other opportunity will come up. In the meantime, live your life for now.

Can you tell me more about what you like about telephone triage? I also do phone triage but I really don't enjoy it at all. I'm trying to find the positives and stay positive myself!
