Patient Care Technicians

I am interested in anyone sharing their hospital's job descriptions on a patient care technician I or II, patient care assistant, etc.

This job description entails inserting or discontinuing foley catheters, discontinuing IV's, completing EKG's, etc.

Also whether this specific job description was approved by the Ohio Board of Nursing.

Our NAs dc IVs, insert and dc catheters and in one of our sister facilities they draw blood and are called patient care Techs. I think it really varies across the board as to what they can do and I'm not sure there's any logic for calling one a NA and the other a PCT.

We had to complete a 200 hour course taught in our nursing school and go through skills validation to become a NA. Since we are not licensed or certified by the state, I'm not sure how they get approval. It most likely has alot to do with the medical director. We're called Nurse Assistant II and don't believe we employ any NA Is.

My guess is the state is aware of what we do. In this litigeous society, I doubt a hospital would risk such a practice just to save a few $$$ if it wern't approved.

I was a PCA while I was in nursing school. We did not d/c IV's or draw blood at the hospital I worked at, but another hospital in the same town did. You can get certified by the state for a nurses aid.
