Dialysis Pct- having trouble getting hired

Nursing Students Technicians

Published

Hi all, I'm not a nurse I just didn't know where to turn for help/ advise.

I got my CHT in November 2017. And I have been applying everywhere for a position with no luck. I did land a couple of interviews resulting in the FAs getting turned off by my lack of experience since I have none. Even though on every website they say they will train & no experience needed... that's a lie. No one wants to train someone completely new. I was an intern at Davita while completing my hours needed to finish my course. I pretty much did everything except cannulate.

My question is how do I go about getting hired? I have no previous work history. I have been a stay at home mom all this time. My kids are finally at an age where i'm comfortable leaving them. I went to school. I did my internship hours. Passed my test. Now what? I'm feeling so discouraged. I want to work. But no one will hire me because my resume is a big blank. I even started applying at places for a clerical/secretarial positions, and still nothing.

I'm surprised Davita wouldn't hire you. I came from a customer service/banking background and had only taken a CNA course when I applied to DAVITA. I went through the STAR program which is their paid training program. I knew NOTHING about dialysis and they trained me. Check to see if a Davita in your area has a STAR program. I know you already went through school, but maybe it's a foot in the door. Also, try the hospitals. I worked at Davita for two years and now I'm at the local hospital in Acute Dialysis.

Just keep applying. It's hard. You have to REALLY sell yourself. Get some resume help to amp it up and highlight all that you know. I had a round robin interview with about 4 people. The lead interviewer really liked me and decided to hire me with zero medical experience. She said that I had the compassion it took to do the job and she could teach me all the technical aspects. I really emphasized patient care and talked about people I knew who had been through dialysis.
