Hello all,
I am currently taking nursing prerequisite courses, and applied to programs that start in fall 2009, which means I need to finish Pathophysiology before June for one of the programs (Samuel Merritt and CSU Bakersfield).
Moorpark College is now full for this course, while Santa Barbara State College had this inexplicable requirement for BMS-146 as a prereq to their Pathophysiology, which means I am now sweating as I await this school to process my prereq challenge form, while the space remaining in Patho continues to dwindle at a steady pace
I am considering taking online Pathophysiology at Canyon College, which allows one to register any time and to proceed through the course at own pace. Looking through this forum I saw some bad things said about Canyon College with regards to their certification programs. However, I am just there to take this one course to transfer the credits. Would this be good to go or should I stay away from Canyon?
Does anyone have information regarding the quality and credibility of NR-315 Pathophysiology at Canyon?
Here is the link to the course syllabus: http://www.canyoncollege.edu/cc/bsn/syllabus/nr315.htm
Thank you in advance.

I am currently enrolled in the course. I found the book online for only $65. It was so huge, heavy, unwieldy and non-conducive to studying that I had it unbound at Staples for $3 and then I bought those cheapo report covers that you used in high school for the chapters that I am studying for each test as I go along. Get the report covers with the ultra thin binding, otherwise you won't be able to read all the text. I still have the book cover so I think I can get it rebound after I am through.
The major downside to this course is that the teacher does not provide chapter outlines so you are pretty much on your own. She suggested to study the Summary and look up all the definitions in each chapter (there is about 100 or so). So I am typing them in a word document so I can search for words or phrases when I am taking the test (she said the tests are obviously are open book because you don't have to go to a testing center). There are 8 tests, it is self paced but you cannot take more than one test every 4 days. You have 3 months to finish it. It takes her 4-5 days to grade each test. Each test has 25 questions and is based on 4 chapters, with a 5th chapter included for review of A and P if it is not fresh in your mind. You have two hours to complete each test. It is about $495 for the course plus a $50 application fee. Salisbury University is accepting the credit.
I have been stressing over the text, although I have completed all the prenursing prereqs with a 3.5, I am really scared by this book! And even more scared by the fact that this is what textbooks will look like from here on out!! I start my accelerated bachelors in nursing in August 2009. Patho is just like A and P but the textbook is more complexly written and you have to look up every other word in a dictionary. I asked the teacher for a few example questions but she refused. They are multi choice.
I haven't taken a test yet....I can hardly get through the text. If I had a choice I would have taken this course in an actual classroom setting with a more accessible teacher. Canyon College is easy to get a hold of, I called them just to make sure it was legit and asked them how many students they have had, etc. The teacher for the course is a Pharm rep RN or something. She said she was on the road a lot.
good luck! PS. I also bought Patho made Incredibly Easy. It only helps a little bit. And a small Barrons dictionary, it doesn't have all the words I am looking up.

Hi Rose,
I'm taking the same class, but just started last week. I'm going to take my test tomorrow. You're right, the book is huge and heavy!! I wanted to know if you took a test yet and how was it? Was it hard and were you able to find the answers in the book? More info would be a great help. I just don't know what to expect either.
Thanks!
Hello kryztality,
I took the first test last week, I missed 4 and scored an 84%. Since the test is open book, open internet, you can search online for help. I missed two that were supposed to be "all of the above" so be sure to entertain all of the answers in a question like that.
I also purchased the Patho Made Incredibly Easy book and this time I am only going to read the chapters pertaining to the next test (immunity and inflammation) I want to see if that will help me enough on the test.
Once I got through the intimidating first few chapters of the book I am enjoying the course.
Good Luck! Let me know if I can help!
Oh cool. Thank you!!

Hi, do you know if Samuel Merritt accepts this class as their pre-req for the ABSN. It's not accredited by the usually people so I was just wondering. I wanted to take Patho, Pharma, and Lifespan Psychology for SMU.
NOT AT ALL!!!!!
Samuel Merritt does not accept it. I wasted my time and money with them. Not to mention wasting a semester. When I contacted my instructor about it later, she pretty much (in not so many words) told me to eat s--t.
Nurse, I'm sorry to hear that! I hope you are doing big thangs anyways!

Hi Krystality,
I'm just wondering if you are attending at Salisbury University. How did you enroll at canyon college for that online class pathophysiology? How did you do of that patho course?
I am also looking for online pathophysiology class, but I don't know where to enroll online and if it's really credited to SU.
any help pls...
thanks
