Hello nurses and future nurses! So I promised myself that the moment I passed my exam, I would post my story to try and help those who are in need!
The NCLEX sucks, and I've never experienced such an anxiety before. I'm sure I can speak for anyone whose taken it before! However, passing the test IS possible and am sure anyone can accomplish it who put the time and effort into it.
The first time I took the NCLEX was February 25, 2016 and failed at 265 questions. The course I used to review was called Ready To Pass, which is offered in only New York and New Jersey. Content wise, it's an amazing class! However, it did not provide any practice with NCLEX style questions.
After I failed, I was completely heartbroken. I put off studying for about 3 months, and finally picked it back up in April. I took the five day live in-person course with Kaplan and studied for about a solid 3 1/2 weeks.
My scores were NOT amazing, I hardly ever scored that golden 65% that they stress to get, so I hope that gives you a little bit of peace of mind.
Question Trainer Scores:
QT 1: 51%
QT 2: 51%
QT 3: 56%
QT 4: 46%
QT 5: 55%
QT 6: 59%
QT 7: 54%
NCLEX Sample Test Scores:
1: 52%
2: 40%
Who Do You See First: 67%
Alternate Format: 28%
QBANK Average: 59%
Readiness Test: 65%
As you can see, my scores were not out of this world, and it definitely made me second guess myself if I was truly ready or not, however, after I took the Readiness Test and scored that 65%, I started to feel a lot better.
I had over 800 QBANK questions left, but I think what truly helped me is that I reviewed EACH question thoroughly, even the right ones! It allowed me to see WHY I was missing the question.
For content, I reviewed the Mark Klimek study guide. Trust me when I say that study guide is amazing!
I get super distracted at home, so I was studying at the library Monday-Sunday for about 6-8 hours a day.
Finally, the last thing that I believe full heartedly helped me throughout this stressful journey is God! I'm a very spiritual person, so whoever your higher power is, whether it be Buddha, The Universe, or God, have faith they will lead you and allow you to pass in the right timing.
As they say, it all starts in the mind. What you think and what you speak is so important, if you struggle with this- really focus on your thinking and tell yourself that you will pass.
Good things don't happen with a negative mind.
I passed at 265 questions and took 5 hours and 20 minutes.
I wish all of you luck, you can do it!
