burn pain management

  1. My husband suffered a partial /full thickness burn from a heating pad, further complicated by an allergic reaction to Silvadene. The wound is healing well, but he has an excrutiating, radiating, intermittent pain occurring every 1-2 hours, lasting app 1-2 minutes. We have tried Neurotin, Hydrocodone, Oxycodone, none of which give any relief. This has been going on since the wound started to heal about 5 days ago. Is this common? Is it temporary? Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

How much Oxycodone did he actually use? You usually have to get up to a pretty decent dose for it to work in burn pain.

A couple of things I can suggest?

I would try Tegretol. Best drug I've ever found for neuropathic pain, which is what this sounds like it could be becomming.

He could also try Methadone. I know a couple of burn specialists who swear by it. (and I swear by it in general )

Finally, once the wound actually heals, should he have pain; I would suggest trying Lidoderm patches. Again, NOT RIGHT NOW, he has to thoroughly heal first... but they could be a god send for this sort of pain.
