PA vs NP: Management Opportunities and Working Abroad

by sdc12 sdc12 (New) New

Hi all,

I am currently working on my pre-reqs for either nursing school (and eventual advanced practice) or PA school. I haven't decided which route I want to go yet and I was hoping someone could help with a couple of questions I have been pondering.

First, I shadowed a PA this past summer who was actually planning on going back to school to become an MD. One of her main reasons for this, $ aside, was that she wants to move abroad and the country she is moving to does not recognize the PA license. So I was wondering what the story is for RNs and advanced practice nurses? Can you practice internationally, or are you limited to a U.S. setting? I don't see myself actually moving abroad, but I like the idea of being able to work on medical missions occassionally.

Second, I have seen people mention (on this site) that management opportunities are more available for nurses than for PAs. Can anyone comment on this? If this is true, that PAs do not go into management/administration, what is the reason?

Any insight into these questions is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!
