I just graduated from highschool in june and i know i want to become a pediatric nurse practitioner. i was wondering if anyone can give me some advice in the nursing career and or what they think about what i plan to do:
so at first i was planning to go to the community college, but the i decided i dont want to spend my time and money on college prepratory courses, and i believe its very hard to get into the nursing program there, and what if i dont get in? then i have to wait to apply again? so,i was reasearching about becoming an lpn first at a techinical school, and gain more experiance, which makes me feel more comfortable for some reason, and later on going back to the community college and go to the RN program, but i realize that i still have to take the prerequisite for nursing and idk how long that will take?,however, they do hold spots into the nursing programs because of the hours completed as an lpn. so i am just a little confused and not sure what would be the best route. i'll glady take any advice from anyone. :)

Welcome to the site.
You can also go to LPN school at a community college for half the cost of a private school. My advice to you since you want to become an NP is to go straight for your BSN out of high school. Do your pre-requisites at a community college and then transfer to a university for nursing school. The reason why I said to get your BSN instead of getting your LPN/ADN is because even if you become an RN at a community college, its going to take you 3 years to get your ADN.

If you want to eventually become an NP, you should go for your BSN.
By the time you get out of school there is a good chance you will need a doctorates to become an NP. The school I'm going to is making all MSN NP programs DNP programs in 2012. I'm in Ohio.

You can also go to the "Specialty" tab and find some nurses in the specialty you're interested in to find out what routes they took. If you want to go to LPN school first to gain experience, then do that. However, don't settle in too comfortable that you forget about your initial goal. Good luck to you!
Thank you all so much,im definatley thinking on going for the BSN :) this website is very helpful.

I too want to be a pediatric nurse practitioner (in the long run). I applied to nursing schools when I was a senior in high school, and I chose a school with a direct entry BSN program. You should look into those.

You can also decide which BSN program you want to get into, look at their pre-reqs and take as many of them as you can at a community college to save money. All the Universities around me recommend this because they understand the high cost of education. I just got my Associates of Science from a CC and will be applying to the University BSN program as a transfer student.
Good Luck!
