Transitioning from case management to the OR

Specialties Operating Room

Published

I have a passion for the OR and always knew that this is the field I wanted to specialize in after I finished nursing school. However, after 6 months of searching with no opportunities I took a case management position in a homecare agency. After working there for a year I was laid off due to company downsizing. I have tried to find an OR position in the NYC area but have not been successful. I have a BA and an ADN in nursing. Most OR residency programs will not consider a candidate without their BSN. Does anyone have any advice on how to get "your foot in the door?"

Thank you in advance.

Find out which hospitals tend to train, or have a need for OR nurses and apply. You may want to get back into acute care and try to transfer in. Network, look into your local AORN chapter. There are many possibilities...it may just come down to luck, and someone believing in you!:)

Well you can try to find place that offer OR class in your area. Here is the link:

Or online class:

Ambulatory Periop 101 : Association of periOperative Registered Nurses

It will look good on your resume. I am taking OR class right now. New grad. Pay with my own money :(

Some of my class mates are there because the hospital pay them.
