enterococco fecalis infection

  1. I have been working in cardiac surgery. We operated on a patient who had mitral valve and aortic valve replacements in July 2006. He lives in my neighborhood so I get reports on how he is doing. I was just told that he was in the hospital with a + blood culture for enterococco fecalis. Could it have been transmitted in the O.R.? He recovered well , was back to work at 75 yrs old (bless his soul)and around December came down with flu like symptoms....
Any experience with infection control and transmission of enterococco fecalis out there? Could it have taken months for this bacteria to have symptoms show?
