Well, I finally turned in my 8 pg. application to what seems like a really classy nursing/retirement home. The next day, the lady calls me back and she seems to really like me and wants me to come in for an interview this friday. She mentions that on my application I marked the part time box, so she tells me that they don't give part time shifts to new employees. They reserve some part time shifts for nursing school students that have worked there for a while.
I do understand, they spend a lot of time and money training people and they wan't them to really be there and be committed, but I'm on the fence. I was really hoping to ease into this slowly working a couple days a week. My kids are 5 and 7 and have never been left at a day care center, and my husband is probably not going to love having so much child care responcibility. My shift would be 2-10. My question is, is this normal for ltc's?

what is normal ? im not sure anything with LTC makes sense. what she says does kinda make sense, their way of thinking seems to benefit its employees. I think if you think part time is what works for you, then only do part time, APPLY somewhere else, theres places everywhere and maybe consider AGENCY employment. there is much flexibility with agency positions. ALSO , ask her if they have flex or prn positions ?

That is really not that normal. A lot of places hire a bunch of part-time employees so they don't have to pay them benefits. Most full-time positions go to those who have been at the facility for awhile. Full-time new hires are normally stuck on nocs, or rotating shifts.
Did you explain your situation to the interviewer? Maybe they have an oncall position available?
yea, i was a little shocked at first, I don't know why but I just assumed that there would be part time available. She did kind of give the impression that they were trying to illiminate people getting certified by them and then running out the door. I really can understand that, but we'lle see how it goes. mabey I'll stay for a year then find somewhere else. Also the pay is so low! Like 8.60 starting, then up to 9 something. The hospitals here pay 12.25 but with experience, so, I'll get the experience.

I agree with Casi. Around here, we have a hard time finding anything that's full time--whether in LTC or anywhere--and that's what most people want so they can get the benefits.
