UNLV SON FALL 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Hello everyone! :)

Since the Summer 2018 cohort is about to be announced, I thought I would start the forum for Fall 2018. Who else is applying? I hope the cut off score isn't as high as it was last fall!

Hey! One thing that helped me out was doing the practice questions online from the Mometrix website.

Free HESI A2 Test Prep - HESI A2 Practice Test

I think the reading and math questions were most helpful. Also, if you purchased the Elsevier study guide, you should have two practice tests on the Elsevier website which are pretty similar to the exam and the difficulty of it. I don't think you should be too afraid. The exam was fairly easy! You just have to make sure you pay attention and don't let the minor details get you! I would say it is pretty easy to get a 90%. In order to score higher, you just need to make sure you don't rush and pay attention to the questions. I got tired towards the end so i rushed. I would also suggest that you do the harder sections first. For me, I hate reading portions of exams, so I did the reading section first, then the grammar, math, and anatomy. Keep in mind that after every section, you can take a little break if you want. I just kind of give myself about three minutes before I move on to the next section. They are nice and even give you noise cancelling headphones! I was really freaked out about the exam but then went in and found out that it wasn't that bad. I studied only for about two days, which is why my score wasn't too great. My lowest was the reading portion.

I got a 92 in reading, 94 in math, 96 in anatomy, 94 in grammar. I am retaking it in about two weeks!

Make sure you memorize your conversions for the math portion and know all of the troublesome word pairs for grammar section. The word pairs were tough for me to grasp, i do not know why. In other words, make sure you are solid on the Elsevier study guide. I made flashcards and just go through them occasionally. As for the reading section, I have no idea how to prepare for that so if anyone has any ideas, that would be great! For anatomy, I did not think the questions dived into great detail. So, if you recently took anatomy, I think you will do just fine.

As for a study schedule, I plan to spread everything out over two weeks, since we have classes and all. Even though, i think one week is more than enough.

I'm guessing no one else is commenting here because it is still so early, they don't know about allnurses, and/or they just want to read our comments and not participate lol. But, do you guys know of anyone else who is applying? I know of about 4 others. Not only is Fall the most competitive, it also has the most applicants.

I know a lot of people applying this fall, but they don't know their points yet (like me....) I will know more after I take the HESI

Makes sense! Hopefully, they will comment here too when they take their HESI.

Do any of you know if NURS 299 will be counted as being 3 or 4 credit hours on the score sheet?

Just wanted to give everyone a heads up, since I officially know my points. I am sitting at 94.74 points which makes me question if I should even apply for the fall term. It is so scary...I have a feeling the cut off will be at least 95 points.

Hey Aprilie22!

Nurs 299 is counted as 3 credit hours.

How was retaking the HESI? Do you think it was harder than the first time around? Similar? More material? Did you score better the second time around? I scheduled my retake for June! And 94.74 is still good! Of course, it is scary. I have fears that the cut off could rise to 95 points as well. It's so hard to grasp whether it really could rise or not, which is the really scary part. But, there's a part of me that thinks that it won't. It's crazy to think that literally a year or two ago, our scores were nothing to worry about! You are still beating the cut-off score from last fall, though. Looking at statistics, how likely are scores to dramatically increase? Especially if we look at the trends. hmmmm... I still think it's worth a shot. You don't want to wait and then the cut-off score is lower than that and regret your decision. You can also get a better idea of where you stand when more people start to post here (which is hopefully really soon). Just a thought!

Hi ssiigg,

I used the Elsevier book and the pocket prep app on my phone (pay for the extended version, you get WAY more practice problems). Now that you have taken the test, you know how the questions are structured and what they are looking for, so you can really focus on those areas. I know other people have spoken highly of grammar books from Barnes and Noble as well.

Good luck, and don't beat yourself up! You still have another chance to take the test again.

Hey Ssiigg,

Sorry that you're feeling down! But as Lindsay71105 said, you do have another chance! There is still hope. :)

On the evolve website, there is a tool where you can see which questions you missed. It doesn't tell you the exact questions, but it lets you know what the topic was about. So that's a way that you can hone in on excelling in your weak points.

To study for this exam, I used the Elsevier book, the HESI pocket prep app, online practice tests, reviewed my A&P lab manuals, and took a lot of tips from this site and the people who have already taken it. Make sure you understand everything in the HESI book because as you may have seen, it is almost the same as on the actual test; with the exception of some grammar and A&P. The HESI pocket prep app should help you a lot with the grammar portion. Also, repetition is key! So just go through all of those questions on the app until you have finished them. For my second attempt, I will most likely go to B&N and read all their HESI books as well haha.
