UMD CNL FALL 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi guys! I know it's a little early... but just wanted to start a thread for those who are applying to the UMD CNL program for fall of 2018. I just submitted my application!

Hi There!

I just applied to the program as well! Hoping that all of my additional documents get uploaded in the right place- what a process!

Good luck to you!

Awesome you too! My status updated to complete and ready for review!

I did have one question that I haven't been able to get a clear answer on regarding this program. Completion of the program earns a Masters degree - but, in what specifically? It sounds like it's not in nursing, but is it a general masters degree?

Also: do you know if, with this degree from UMD SON, one could complete a post masters certificate program to enter into advanced practice nursing (FNP)?

Or would you need a Masters in Nursing? Trying to get things straight and the wording from the website is a bit vague. Any idea?

Thanks!

My understanding is that you get a Master of Science in Nursing degree, and you can later sit for your Clinical Nurse Leader certificate. At least, I think that is how they explained it at the open house in early November. At that event, they told us that most graduates of the CNL program wait a bit before they sit for that exam.

That was my understanding as well -- but now that I am looking at it, it says MS not MSN...maybe it is just assumed? I also attended the information session and they said students typically complete the program, take the NCLEX and work as an RN first before sitting for the CNL exam. To become an Family Nurse Practitioner, I believe you have to enter their Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program. I am not sure for other schools though.

Anyone know when they begin reviewing applications? They were in touch with me by email the week before Christmas to ask when I could get my final grades from Fall 2017 classes (prereqs) to them. I told them I had requested them right after finals, and they responded that that was good, because they begin reviewing those who already applied in the middle of January. The priority deadline is March 1.

@Julietmei - I believe they start to review applications this Monday, Januaray 15th.

The only thing that I have heard (here and on the grapevine) is that if you don't get called in for an interview, you probably are not going to be admitted. I also have read that they give you a writing test during the interview. Anyone know anything about that? At the open house/info session this fall, the students said there are a lot of papers and writing. Is that unusual for a nursing program?

Hello All, I have also applied for the Fall 2018 cohort. @ JulietMei From what I heard we do a lot of our clinicals with the BSN students but we are assigned more writing assignments about nursing practice and leadership. I currently go to Salisbury; and from what I hear from the nursing students hear they do not write many papers just care plans, but they can be nearly 20 pages in length.

My status has changed from "Ready for Review" to "Committee Ready." I wonder if that means they are moving applications along now ....

Hi Juliet Mei -

My status also changed to "Committee Ready"! I have no idea what this means..
