UBC BSN September 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi Everyone!

I've been searching for a thread for applicants to UBC's BScN program for September 2017, but I haven't found one. Please feel free to point me in the direction of an existing thread, or add to this one! I'm applying to UBC, U of T, and UWO for September, but UBC is definitely my first choice. Looking forward to hearing from everyone!

Hi,

It's so nice to meet some more people applying to UBC for nursing! I am a relatively young student, in my second year of my undergraduate degree, so I am definitely a little worried about how that will affect me, however I do think that the rest of my application is relatively strong! My undergraduate degree thus far has been in Biochemistry, Honours Stream at the University of Calgary, and have a 4.0 GPA. Grade-wise, I'm not too worried. I have volunteered for awhile with the Children's Hospital, The Ronald McDonald House, and clubs on my university campus! I have also played many sports over the years and done a lot of travelling with them. I'm excited to read about everyone else who is applying too, and if anyone has any advice or encouraging words for me that'd be much appreciated!

Anyone else submit their supplemental application today? I must have re-read every answer at least 10 times before reluctantly hitting the "submit" button. I'm wondering if anyone has contacted admissions at UBC to see how the process will work this year, now that they are no longer doing interviews? I'm guessing (or perhaps hoping) that offers of admission will go out sooner than last year as applicants must write their CASPer test in January or February. If anyone has any input on this, I'd love to hear it! Thanks! :)

I could be mistaken, but are there no longer Skype interviews even? I could have sworn that I had rea that but I certainly could be wrong! Good luck to you!

From what is on the UBC nursing web-page it says CASPer is a bunch of video and text scenario so no Skype from my understanding! Also I noticed it said "This format will allow all eligible applicants to be considered in the final admission decision process."... Makes me think they won't be looking at everyones CASPer?

To anyone who has already taken it (JAN 26 date), any advice? Without breaking the confidentiality clause?

tdmah, I looked over mine for countless days! Stressful times!

I actually think this means that everyone who meets the admission requirements (with a minimum 70% average and all the prerequisites) will have their CASPer results viewed. This will make the admissions process more objective. I don't know how much the CASPer will count for, however.

Last year it was 40% GPA and 60% supplemental. This year they have to include CASPer for everyone probably. What you said makes sense! Do you know if anyone has emailed admissions to check how it works? I'd be curious to know how many people applied, weighting of the application documents, and a timeline for the whole process!

I am pretty sure that it was the opposite last year and that it was 60% GPA based, at least according to this powerpoint! https://nursing.ubc.ca/sites/nursing.ubc.ca/files/documents/BSN%20%20information%20session%20Nov.%203%202015.pdf

For anyone interested the link for this years information is below.

I've emailed to set up a phone appointment to ask how the new process works. I'll write an update after I've spoken to admissions. :)

Has anyone seen/read/heard anything about the references? Last year they said that if they were going to call, it would be in June or July. I just learned that one of my references only provides references if you have been with them for x amount of time, and I haven't reached that threshold...but by June or July I will have. Any knowledge on this would be so helpful!!

So from what I have read it says they may if they do not contact your references it does NOT mean you are not being considered. They don't contact everyone! So you might be in the clear. But as for references, tdmah will post the how applications will go this year and if there is a timeline it should clear things up for you. I think they will be going through everything sooner though.. Last years admissions were being offered in May if I am not mistaken.

Thanks!

Hello! I went to the info session last summer where they said they wouldn't actually be calling most people's referees! I think this may be something that they remove from next year's application requirement.
