Northeastern Hybrid Direct Entry Nursing Spring 2014

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi All,

I just received news that I have been accepted into Northeastern's Direct Entry online accelerated nursing program. I am wondering if anyone else is also in the spring 2014 cohort? Just thought I would get a thread going to communicate details such as living arrangements, loans, what to expect etc.

Congratulation! if you dont mind me asking what GPA did u get in?

I applied to this program as well. Can anyone tell me what GPA they got into the school if you dont mind?

As long as you meet the minimum gpa requirement then you shouldn't be worried. It's about marketing all of your skills, experience, and achievements to the school and conveying strength in character and commitment to the program. If you do that it won't matter if you have a 3.0 or 4.0

Is anyone accepted into the Summer 14 start for this NU program? if so, when is the orientation?

I dont have facebook anymore :(

Edarcy1991: Do you live in Boston? I am not sure if it's you who lives out of state, but if you are planning to move, I think it would be a good idea to start looking now, because everyone around here moves in August/September and the competition for good and cheap apartments is pretty high.

I do live in Boston already! Thank you though :)

I have seen some comments about the quality of the program and I have to say, Buyer Beware...and that is exactly what you are a buyer. This program is a for-profit sales game. NEU isn't even running the program. It is a third party called Orbis Education. They are a for-profit company that is contracted by NEU to use a University of Phoenix model to make $$$. It is really sad, I enjoyed the program at first, I was in one of the first cohorts, but we learned about Orbis and after some research, the company received investment $$$ and needs to enroll a certain number of students per semester to keep the investors happy. They even have dropped the admissions standards to admit students. The NEU faculty hates the online program and most don't teach in the program because they refuse to due to concerns over academic quality and standards. There are major quality issues and Orbis and the Hybrid program are know for putting "butts in seats" not educating prepared nurses. You will see that the clinical sites are not the same as the ground program. That is because the clinical placement office at NEU and the faculty don't want the online students in those rotation sites.

The entire administrative staff has left Burlington since the Fall. We have heard they all quit because it became all sales driven with advisors having to call a certain number of students per day to get them to apply, to bribe students with shady offers like "scholarships" which are paid for by Orbis. It is really sad. I am upset I spent money on this program and that the name NEU does not carry the reputation I thought it did. SO sad when the education of students is lost and it becomes a numbers and money game.

Wow! That's really bad! Your diploma is given by Orbits or NEU? What does it say?

Did you get a job after the program?

Do they really offer scholarships?

My diploma is from NEU. I am still looking for a job. I would recommend worrying about passing the courses and NCLEX before worrying about getting a job. A lot of people failed courses or our of the program and a number of other had to go on a different curriculum in an attempt to keep up.

Oh, wow...a lot of people failed? That tells me a lot about the quality. How many people started the program and how mamy of them actually graduated? How are the online lectures? What about the clinical sites?

Do they offer scholarship? What about financial aid?

How long have you been looking for a job? I am just afraid that the fact that the lectures are online the hositals will be skeptical about hiring those nurses. What is the NCLEX passing rate?

Obviously I don't have specific numbers on people that failed, etc., but I can say that people were not doing well and this was evidenced by people leaving the program and repeating courses. The online lectures are nothing special. They are PowerPoints and some audio which isn't great quality. There have also been a number of times when Angel (the online system) wouldn't work and this occurred during our proctored exams too. For me the clinical sites were good, but not in Boston and they definately utilize the 50 mile radius. I only heard of people getting scholarships who were starting close to the deadline. We all figured that was because Orbis needed to get more people. When one girl called financial aid they said the "orbis money" wasn't in yet. Most people got some financial aid but it is not a lot and the office is really hard to work with. I have been looking for a job since December. I was lucky and graduated with a good GPA and passed the NCLEX, but it is still hard. You should ask the pass rate to the staff. I never spoke with the new staff, they seem like used car salesmen and I never felt like I was getting real information so I gave up.
