  1. Hey everyone,
I just got a student internship on a med-surg/oncology floor, and wanted to ask for advice on working in oncology.

While it will be heart wrenching at times, and maddening at others, it will be one of the best decisions you can make as a nurse. It could also lead to more satisfying work as a hospice nurse should you decide to ever leave and work at hospice home or hospice home health care as that sort of nurse. Good luck....prepare your heartstrings. You can do it. It takes a lot of empathy and guts but the glory is worth it.

I started in oncology nursing as a student as well. I then started on an inpatient unit upon graduating and am now at an outpatient infusion center. I am applying to schools currently to become an oncology nurse practitioner. Never knew I would like it so much! Oncology nursing is challenging, emotional, and you have to constantly keep up on the new trends...but it is the most fulfilling specialty you could choose.
