blood test for cancer

  1. would a blood test show the doctor if you might have cancer? some nurses say yes some no.

    It depends on the type of cancer. For example - prostate cancer they use a PSA (prostatic specific antigen), for ovarian cancer - the CA125. I'm sure there are others, but that's the only ones I can come up with quickly. If you have concerns, I would address them with your MD.

    What kind of blood test and what kind of cancer?

    Elevated CEA, prostate antigens, LDH will show evidence of some cancers but are very specific and not run unless the MD is specifically looking/testing for them. They must also be correlated with other tests.

    A routine CBC w/diff can show various anemias that may be indicative of certain leukemias/lymphomas, but other tests must be run make certain that it is indeed that cancer and not another condition.

    Multiple Myeloma can cause a very high serum calcuim, but high calcium can be attributed to other conditions, again correlating tests are necessary.
