Folks,
I live in New Mexico and there are only a handful of schools that offer Microbiology here and they've already filled up the classes I need that don't conflict with my Nursing courses. Does anyone know of any national school that has a totally online Microbiology component?

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm taking it next semester through ccconline. Its a 4 credit class. I think its also offered by Rio, but I'm not totally sure on that one.
I live in New Mexico, do they let out of state students take online classes? I can't find it on the web page for the school system.

I believe that Brigham Young Univ has an online microbiology course that is very difficult and expensive.
Here's the link for Rio Salado http://www.riosalado.edu/
I haven't done anything through them so I cant give you any advice. If you do however do a search on here, there is lots of info.
BTW I think both of them allow out of state students to apply. I also think Rio is slightly cheaper, I heard that here someplace.

Ocean County College has just developed a totally online Microbiology course (BIOL 232 DL Microbiology). Both the lecture and lab are taught totally online. They send you a labpaq kit that goes for about $300 that has a microscope and a hands-on lab kit on a "micro" scale.

I spoke with the dean. They get students from all over the US taking their online science pre-req courses. There are many students from Alaska taking their A&P courses so they can get into their nursing school in Alaska.
I have just signed up for their online Microbiology course. I will keep you posted on how it goes. I took their Contemporary Health course online and absolutely loved it.
Thanks

Excelsior's course is self study not on-line. The cousre wasn't too hard using cliff's notes to clarify the information. No lab portion just the one exam.

I registered for Rio Salado for next semester. It was the cheapest, and you don't have to buy a lab kit.

I took Microbiology, online through CCConline. My home school was Pike's Peak. I'm an out of state student so the cost for me was a little bit higher than if you were in Colorado. With book, lab pack, microscope and tuition it was $1500. Anyhow, it's definitely doable, a little timeconsuming but here's the breakdown.
There are 15 chapters to read. A quiz on each chapter, good thing is the professor allows you to take each quiz twice and you get to keep the higher score. And there are 5 unit exams. Quizzes are 10 questions each and you get 30 minutes to do them, open book. Exams are 50 questions each and you have 2 hours to take them, open book.
There are 13 labs and they are a bit time consuming and planning ahead is essential! There are also, 5 lab quizzes (15 questions, 30 minutes) that can only be taken once and lab set questions (5 sets) you submit for each labset.
The class also requires weekly online discussions. These are actually pretty interesting. The professor also gives extra credit discussions. And there is a 3-5 page paper you need to do on a disease/illness relating to microorganisms.
I know it seems like a lot, but the class is definitely doable. It just depends on how disciplined and organized you are to get the requirements done. For example there are 5 units (10 week accelerated class), each unit consists of approx. 4 chapters to read, 4 chapter quizzes, one exam, 3 labs, 1 lab quiz, lab questions, and 2 discussions. You have two weeks to complete the requirements for each unit. So if you split the work up some for each week, it's not too bad.
It is alot of work but it's not "hard". No memorization really, just alot of reading and time consuming labs.

Blueelle,
I am taking a similar Microbiology Online course at Ocean County College in Toms River, NJ.

I think they also use the LabPaqs from Hands-On Science, Inc. in Denver. Does yours have the oil immersion lens and camera? Did you find the camera useful? How do you get rid of the organisms when you are done. I know they are supposed to be harmless (Biosafety Level 1).
I am borrowing my microscope back from someone I lent it to last semester.
