OMG! 4 years as a full-time student to get an associate's degree?!!

For the 2010/2011 school year, my college has added an additional prerequisite for the pre-nursing students to complete. The school highly advise that students finish ALL of their pre-req's before they apply to the nursing program. The school states that they are looking for a GPA higher than 2.7; but my classmate told me yesturday, an advisor infomed her that the nursing program is looking for a GPA of 3.2 or higher. The school wants no 'W's, D's or F's'.

Because this additional pre-req was suddenly required, I now have to apply for the nursing program in October 2012, just to start classes in Fall 2013. With an expected graduation date of 2015!!! Seriously? I have to wait four years as a full-time student to get a 2 year associates degree? Insane.

Sounds typical.... Are you in Texas?

You should go to a nearby state and apply to another nursing program. The out of state tuition might get you but at least you will graduate sooner. Your first two years as a nurse, save, save and save until you pay it all off. You have to be dedicated, but in two little years, you'll be free!

I'm in PA. Thanks for the advice!

I feel the same way. Seems ridiculous doesn't it? I'm at least three years into the process and haven't even been accepted into the program yet. It gets discouraging at times but I just keep plugging along hoping it will all be worth it some day.

That's what it took me.

But an ADN ain't no regular Associate's degree.

yep, Im at least 3 years in too and not accepted into the program, and my school has also just changed its requirements (I'm in CA tho) ,so I have even more to do. I am thinking of going the LVN-RN route now so at least when I apply to RN I will have some advantage.

Thats outrageous. If I were you, I would look for schools where I can transfer. I would not want to be waiting and paying for a degree that is taking as long as a bachelor's degree. Nope. Time is money.

I hear you on that one! I just found out that the deadline to finish all my prereqs for the bsn program is May 2012 to start in the Spring 2013 program! Now I am forced to take 5 courses this semester and 5 in the spring but the pain is only for a short while to start sooner. Wait times across the country are insane but I just figure the economy sux right now and new grad nurses are having a hard time so maybe when I graduate the economy will be better... *being optimistic* :saint:

Same here! As a matter of fact, I posted about this a few months back after I mapped out all of my classes and realized I was looking at over 3 to 3.5 years to finish. Sigh..it's a tough pill to swallow, but I like what the poster said above about how the ADN "ain't no regular Associate's degree.."

Is it really ridiculous in the competitiveness of nursing school to expect around a 3.2, not really. With the amount of applications you kinda have to be at the top of your game.

Ds, Fs and W aren't going to get anybody into any professional program. Sorry :(
