Ok, I know I can't be alone... who loves NS?

Published

With all the complaining and venting about NS going on, I feel like its time to turn the tables.... I love nursing school! Of course its never fun to be swamped with assignments, papers, and exams. I have certainly encountered some students who seem like they havent absorbed anything theyve been taught, and a few nurses who dont seem to care much for students.

But in general, I feel like Im learning a ton, my instructors have all been incredibly supportive and very much available for any kind of help anyone might need. I have never felt like I was thrown into something I was not taught how to handle, and have always had support in practicing skills for the first, second, third time, etc. I have not encountered any nightmare profs or instructors (ok a few profs cant give a good lecture to save their life- thank God for good textbooks!), and my marks are great. I really feel like they are there to give me good advice, and support me in my learning and in becoming a good nurse. I love the work I do in clinicals and I have been so reassured that I made the right decision to go back to school- I feel like I was made to be nurse!

Anyone else?

(and does anyone know why when I try to use an apostrophe in these reply boxes, I instead get a box pop up that says "Quick find (links only)" )

I LOVE nursing school! I am also learning so much! Is it hard? Sure it is! Is it stressful? Sure it is! So is nursing as a career. People need to realize that part of nursing school is putting people under pressure to see who can focus and who falls apart. When we have a patient that is circling the drain we need to be able to focus so that we can help that patient, not throw our hands up in the air saying, "I give up, it's too hard".

Also, the number 1 complaint that I hear from other students is the instructor doesn't spoon feed us the information. Of course she's not! We need to be able to find things out for ourselves. She's not going to be standing over our shoulder 2 years down the line when we can't find something out about a medication or disease or whatever. We need to be able to find this ourselves and to critically think about the situation.

So, do I love nursing school? You bet I do! It's a personal challenge for me to complete this program, to get the best grades I can and to become a great nurse come heck or high water!

I'm in too. It has been a challenge, interesting, exciting and very rewarding. It's not for the faint of heart but neither is nursing. A few students complain loudly but they are a small minority, the vast majority of my classmates are thrilled to be nursing students.

ME!

It's kind of like my kids...a PITA at times, but still love them/it.

I see you saw our thread yestarday;) I glad you guys love nursing school and I can't WAIT to start myself! So far my school has been great and I have heard positive things about the nursing program too. So keep up the good work and positive attitude! Good luck and God bless:)

Absolutely, you cannot expect to be spoon fed through school. So much of nursing is independent and you are only as good a nurse as you are willing to put in effort. There is not going to be anyone holding your hand, and a lot of your knowledge has to come from things you read about, learn about, or figure out on your own. Dont ask what a drug is for- look it up! Dont ask your instructor to explain your clients medical condition- read about it! Learn to put 2 and 2 together on your own. Ask for help after you have tried to figure things out yourself. I think that has got to be the biggest thing people need to learn in NS to be successful.

I am the happiest I have ever been in my life. Perhaps it is due to my life experiences and why I chose this profession (I lost my oldest son to cancer three years ago, he was 13), but this has been nothing but positive, uplifting, exciting and good for me, my family and my life. I am so happy it almost feels wrong...lol! Yes, it is hard and stressful and anxiety producing and sometimes not exactly what I hoped. But none of that takes away from the wonderful for me. I am thankful to be here.

I've really enjoyed nursing school as well. Besides all the usual stuff that I could do without, it really has been a great experience. I love learning about the subjects, actually knowing that I will need to use the knowledge in the future and am not just satisfying some requirement for a degree. We have a really good group of students in my class; I know that all of them had to be pretty intelligent and competent in order to be accepted into the program and I have a lot of respect for all of them. Everyone seems to get along really well. Clinicals can be a mix of excitement, boredom, confusion and quirkiness, but I look forward to each one and the opportunities I experience there :)

i like clinical

sometimes i wish i have more patients to take care of because i finish things way too fast and i just sit there. and i feel so useless when that happens

i hate the exams though... i need to study harder for them, and I WILL!!!

I LOVE nursing school! Yes it's hard, consumes my whole life, and has some scary aspects but I love feeling like I'm accomplishing something that will one day pay off. Don't get me wrong - I can't wait until graduation but in the meantime, I'm very content.

Although I am not doing well in one of my classes (I knew before hand it would be one I struggled more in and 2 bad tests have really messed it up) I still really enjoy it, I am loving clinicals at the hospital. I will be beyond upset if I have to retake this class, mainly because I have made some really great friends in my class. BUT it's my own fault and not my schools. Anyway, I love NS 95% of the time and the times I don't like it, it's not the school or teachers that make it that way.
