Huron Road School of Nursing...

U.S.A. Ohio

Published

Hi, I am considering attending this school. However, I am a bit concerned about safety issues in traveling there. It seems it's in a high crime area, and I'm looking to do the E/W program.

Anyone have any insight into this? It seems like a great program, but I am worried about driving home from there alone at night. Am I worried for nothing or should I be worried?

Thanks!

Yes, its a very stressful process. The evening class is probably full. Class start Wednesday nite.. Dont give up! They also told me that if someone drops the program within the first week, they will call people to take their seats :) If you dont hear anything by next week... definately get in touch with barb by phone, so you can get set up for Janurary. The best times to call her is the evening. i think she stays late.

Hi Everyone,

Am curious about Huron School of Nursing....I am doing pre-reqs and core courses at Tri-C right now. They are placing for Spring semester for Nursing. Of course, I need to pass their Nurse Entrance Exam with a 80 percent in the math portion which I think is really high! Anyway, I am starting to look at other options in case I don't get into tri-c.

I have a bachelor's in English from Ohio State and I have completed Psy 1010, Bio 1100, A and P 1 at tri-c. My math, english and electives are transferred in from my B.A. I am taking A and P 2 and Psy 2020 right now. I will take Micro in the spring and then all my non-nursing courses will be done for tri-c.

Was curious as to the pre-reqs for Huron and when one can apply? Do I need to wait until my grade posts for A and P 2 at the completion of this fall semester? THe website is a little confusing (for instance says they have a diploma in nursing for those with a bachelors, but I could find nothing about that online) and I was hoping to get some info from those who have been through the application process.

Thanks in advance and good luck to those beginning the program!

Becky

Becky,

Your situation is a lot like mine! I was also enrolled and preparing for the Tri-c program, and I also have a degree. I found Tri-C's program to be unorganized and the NET test scores are pretty high. So I applied to Huron in March and was OFFICIALLY accepted in July.

The pre-req's you need BEFORE THEY WILL EVEN CONSIDER YOUR APP are; BIO 1100, A&P 1 and 2, PSYCH 1010, ENG 1010, MATH 1000 or higher.

Because you already have a degree... you will only have to take the nursing courses and the support courses (ie. sociology, philosophy, etc) Basically, you will not have to take any of the classes needed to get the actual associate degree from tri-c. (ie. communications, arts&humanities, etc)

If I were you I would apply NOW.. just to get the ball rolling. You never know when they may start a waiting list ;) However, the commitee will not review your application for offical acceptance until ALL FINAL GRADES are turned in. But if you get you app on file, the student services dept will help you get together all you need to complete the admission process, then you'll know where you stand. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll help you the best i can.

Good Luck.

Bubbly,

Thanks for the info! So, it looks like I can "officially" apply after my grade for anatomy 2 posts in december. I will take your advice and start my application now, so that way it will at least be on hold for that grade. This is actually positive since I am not taking micro until the Spring -- I was worried I'd need that to apply. I am still going to take the NET and see how I do -- the generic track at Tri-c still has space for the spring. If I concentrate solely on the accelerated, I'd have to wait until Fall to start the nursing courses. With the accelerated option though, I get out of taking that pesky NET exam. I feel like I am in limbo -- I want to plan, but I understand it is a waiting game.

Do you plan to go for a BSN in the future? What are the ramifications of a diploma in nursing in terms of advanced nursing education?

Thanks,

Becky

Becky.. Yep, you can "officially" apply once you have your final grade for A&P 2 submitted. Unfortunately they wont "hold" any spot for you pending that grade, but they will keep you on the right track to getting in the program. Micro was hard for me and half my class so if your taking it with no other courses, you'll be at an advantage. When the commitee has ALL your info, they'll meet (usually once a month) to determine if your accepted and for what start date. They consider A LOT of things for admission, including...... GPA, your previous degree, all support courses completed.... those all play a role in their decision, >which works for you:D. As for diplomas in nursing... i believe they limit you to entry level positions. For management, surgery etc. you probably need a BSN. Im going into a RN-to-BSN program upon my graduation and passing the boards. Its online through Ohio University and Cleve Clinic (where i work). I expect in the future a diplome just wont be enough????????:( Good luck with applying... you never know, they might get you set up for spring!!!:nurse:

Hi all,

I was going to go thru the Tri-C program that contracts with my work but I also am looking into Huron's program because they offer e/w. For those of you who were accepted or already enrolled how is your schedule (days vs. evenings and hours lecture vs. clinicals and labs) Just trying to sort out my options w/ work a family and all that fun stuff :) Thanks for any help.

Good luck to all the future nurses.

Aim

Hi and congrats to starting your nursing education:)

I had a question about the e/w program (my interview is on Thur.) How many days is the attendance and I was confused if the semester included summer hours/courses also. I was told I have an option for either days or eves but, I really need e/w. I have a previouse degree and finished all the other pre-reqs so I should be strictly just nursing classes (i hope:). I'm babbling on just wanted a little info on the program before I decided between Huron or Tri-C's Parma Hospital Program. So any info on semester cost and books so far and hours would be awesome.

Thanks and good luck!

Does anyone know as far as books are concerned if used books are ok? Or is there web based homework that requires the manufacture CD's & book codes? I'm starting school in Jan and got a copy of the book list and there is quite a bit of reading required and I'm looking for a head start.

Any info would be great,

Thanks,

I know this is a little bit late, but I didn't find this post until just now. I would be very careful about Huron. I know people who have graduated from there, but I also know people who dropped out or failed. It is challenging, yes, but when I was there (2008) it was very disorganized and there was a lack of communication between instructors. I dropped out the second semester because I absolutely hated it. I went to an LPN program afterward and I loved it. I had finished all of my prerequisites and corequisites before attending Huron, but it was a huge waste of time. I would encourage you to make sure this is the right school for you and also look and apply to other schools, at least one. If I've learned anything from that experience, it is to be very selective about schools and investments. ~ Ion, LPN

I'm there now and it is challenging, but very doable if you stay on top of your assignments. I would not say the communication is worse than any other university I've attended. I'm actually really enjoying it there. I think they've pulled it together. My instructor was saying they were redoing their curriculum around the time you were there. Maybe that's why things were disorganized.

I graduated from HSON in Dec of 08' . I was an e/w student. It does have a good reputation. It may have been a little unorganized at the time, but as long as you are organized and on top of your game you should be ok. Some of the material you will have to self teach yourself, but there are always other students that will work in groups to help each other. The good thing about Huron is that it is a clinical based program. You will start clinicals in the beginning of your first semester and you will do all of your clinicals within the cleveland clinic hospital system with maybe the exception of psych. I was offered a job before I even sat for my NCLEX.

Well I am back to strongly considering Huron as tri-c has changed their entrance exam, is now placing for spring of 2011 and the accelerated program will probably fill before I am eligible to apply pushing me back to Fall of 2011. I have sent in all my things to Huron, got a letter saying I all I needed to do was pay the 30 dollar fee and then called the cashier and paid it by phone. How long after everything is in do you hear from them? The website says March 1 deadline for Fall classes....do they wait until the deadline to start reviewing? I was hoping to have some info sooner than summer time. Also, the TEAS test...why do you take that after acceptance? Can they then rescind the offer based on those scores? I thought TEAS was an entrance exam. Any info is appreciated.
