Offered Job by DON, HR retracts job

Published

I was interviewed by a nursing home Director of Nursing. I disclosed that I was in IPN, and the interview concluded with a verbal job offer, and start date. She told me to anticipate a phone call Thursday or Friday from the director of HR. Today is Thursday, and no phone call. Instead, I received an e-mail from the Director of HR stating that my application was reviewed and I am unfortunately not a "right fit for the position."

Of all people, I would think the DON would be competent in choosing who is right for the job, and that her job offer to me would stand against Human Resources. I am positive this is about me being board ordered and in IPN, which is discrimination. I emailed the director of Human Resources back stating that the DON verbally offered me a job and start date. Am awaiting a reply.

anyone been in a similar position before? Can anything be done legally since I cannot possibly think of any excuses for HR to tell me I'm not a fit when the DON stated otherwise.

Human resources actually has the final say, from what I understand. My offers have always been conditional on passing their various screenings.

Board ordered IPN is not a protected class. I hope you're able to find something else soon.

Unfortunately I have heard that this is very common. The hiring manager or DON offers the job but HR takes it away and HR has the final say. I have heard that people have better luck with smaller organizations that do not have a formal HR department.

Thank you for the advice and input!

Nothing new to add, just agreeing with the others, this happens all the time. Discrimination lawsuits are only valid if they are discriminating against you due to gender, race, etc. As Sour Lemon stated, being in IPN is not protected against discrimination. Both my job offers were with companies that didn't have a full legal department or HR department. Smaller organizations. Good luck! I received many of those "not a good fit" emails! Hah, with 10 years level one trauma ER experience, my CEN, TNCC, ENPC and PALS. Yeah right. Keep applying, you'll find something.
