OB/Psych/Peds/Pharm

Published

OB/Psych/Peds/Pharm are my next semester classes. If anyone has any info on how to get a head start over summer, much is appreciated!! I dont have kids so I dont have much experience or anything with OB and peds! I dont want to overwelm myself, I just want a understanding before I hit class in august... Thanks :)

I would just start looking over the Pharm concept maps so that class will take away less time from studying for NUR 112. You will have an exam between the two classes what feels like almost every week. OB is SO much information. I would maybe just start looking thought the textbook (if you have it) and get familiar with the vocabulary. They threw a HUGE chunk of PEDS at us at the end of the semester right when we were about to study for finals. If you can get ahold of someone's PowerPoints looking over the PEDS content this summer may help. As far as psych i would start learning Erikson's developmental stages, therapeutic and non therapeutic communication, and maslow's and just have a good understanding of those. Good luck! : )

solid advice above - I just have to second that OB is A LOT of different vocabulary - it's like its own language. it would definitely help if you brushed up on some of the OB terminology. I didn't love OB in terms of L&D and Postpartum, but those freaking babies were so cute - I loved working in the nursery! it's a little intimidating with assessments though - everything is just a hundred times faster!

as for psych, I'd brush up on the specific pharm for specific pathos and how to keep a patient safe, etc. (in addition to what was suggested above). I loved psych - a lot of people were afraid and hated it but I thought it was so interesting because it's almost 100% subjective psychosocial stuff - you truly have to practice therapeutic communication and not just memorize a bunch of interventions and techniques.

for pharm, might be obvious but don't bother with specific names of drugs, just break them down into different classes cholinergics vs. anticholinergics, etc.

good luck!

Our OB and peds instructor sent us homework for the summer! We have to make up drug cards, define a ton of key words and phrases, etc. it's going to keep me very busy! Lol if you're interested, I can send you the files with what we have to prepare. It's a lot, but we start clinicals right off the bat so we will be prepared!
