When to take RNC-OB?

  1. Hi everyone!

I was just wondering how many years I should work in L&D before taking this exam? I'd really like to work my way towards being certified in OB. I've currently only been working in L&D for a year and a half. I do want to say that 90% of our patients are high risk. We have a great MFM team and level III NICU, so I am definitely exposed to a lot!

Any advice would be great 👍

I believe the NCC requirement is that you must work in OB for 2 years before you're eligible.

Having the inpatient OB certification demonstrates expertise in the subject matter, something that most nurses don't have at 2 years. For me personally, I think 3-4 years in is a good time to take it, but that's just me and my personal opinion, which is not right or wrong.

At this juncture of your career, I would steer you towards getting your EFM cert, and save the RNC-OB for after you've done another couple years.

But I wanted to say that I admire your ambition towards becoming certified! I wish more nurses would.
