When circ's go bad...

Has anyone seen a circ go really bad? I saw one today where the doc took too much foreskin off and the skin on the shaft ended up "degloving" from the fascia underneath. A urologist had to come in and do "damage control." The people I've talked with say they've never seen anything like this happen before.

My FIL had to be circumsized as an adult (both he and MIL have since passed, so I don't know the circumstances)...AND my grandson had to be circ'ed when he was 5 (chronic irritation and infections).

Both went thru absolute hell. I honestly don't know what the answer is, but I do respect the decisons of those that have to make the choices.

I presume you are directing this post at moi? No, I don't take it as an attack :) I had my mom stay in the room with my baby. She has 3 sons, so she has seen it all :) I didn't want to stay in the room. I was in there until it was time to cut. When he was strapped down he was very tired (he was only a few days old), so he didn't act like he was being held against his will. I was expecting him to be uncomfortable after the procedure and the days coming, but nope...he was calm as always! Even when he gets his shots...cries immediately afterward, but that same day and even days later...never acts like his leg is hurting. Maybe he has a high pain tolerance like mommy!! I had a c-section with him and really didn't have much pain at all...slight discomfort.:)

yeep, I was directing that at you, I guess I forgot to quote your post! ooops :imbar ! Thanks for your response. Sounds like your little man is quite a trooper!

In oregon at my hospital we have about a 50% circ rate. the peds docs DONT do them. I am ethically opposed to permanently altering somebody's body, esp thier genitals without their permission, and for cosmetic purposes. I dont assist with them.

I think that what is most upsetting and hard for me to accept as eithical/humane is the fact that most of the circumcisions performed on infants are performed without anesthesia!:crying2:

The main reason many adults are circed is because U.S. doctors don't know of alternative treatments. If there is a problem here the urologist seems to be a little cut happy. In other countries, where RIC is not practiced, when a man goes in with a problem there are topical creams and other procedures that are used to avoid circing.

I don't have children yet, but my best friend had a baby boy in May of this year. He was circumcised, and afterwards she was told to retract the skin daily for several weeks so it didn't grow/heal back together. Is this true? How do you care for the circ post-op?

I started out as an L&D nurse and am now a surgical nurse. I have only passed out one time in my career, during a circumcision. Something got to me about the baby being strapped onto the papoose board. Also, I remembered my nursing professor who told us the story about the boy who had a botched circ and was raised as a girl.

I don't know which way I'll go if I have boys. Lots to think about.

There is no skin left in the circs I've attended to pull back or retract.

teenagers want to look like everyone else, and the locker room syndrome is going to come into play if you live in an area where most are circumsized. ( I have no real opinion on this yet, though if i had a boy at this point i would probably be for it. )

"These more recent studies demonstrate that the orginal low incidence of cervical cancer in Israeli Jewish women is genetic. The first shows that women have as many pre-cancerous lesions as other women (suggesting the same exposure to HPV) but they tend not to progress to cancer because of a certain allele (variant) in the p53 gene (whose normal function is to control cell proliferation). In Moroccan Jewish women, who have a high incidence of cervical cancer, the cancer-permitting allele of p53 is more common. These are good studies demonstrating the interaction between genetics and environment. "

CHECK Out that page for more. very intereesting.

"Since the recommendation had been made that circumcision should be used as a preventative measure against cancer of the cervix, we sought further confirmation of this hypothesis. An almost ideal population was that of the well women attending a cancer detection facility, where the population was split almost equally between women whose husbands were circumcised and those whose husbands were not. The discovery rate for cancer of the cervix among non-Jewish women whose marital partners were circumcised was no different from the rate among non-Jewish women with noncircumcised husbands. Further, the use of a sheath contraceptive by the marital partner, which has an effect equivalent to circumcision in that the cervix is protected from contact with the smegma, was found not to be associated with rate differences for cancer of the cervix."

As an Orthodox Jew, I am required by halacha (Jewish law) to circumcise my son. It is considered a mitzvah, a commandment, from God.

Having said that, if I was not Jewish, I would NEVER circ my baby boy without medical reason, and I don't think it's a good idea.

The practice of mass circumcision began when doctors noticed a lower cervical cancer rate among Jewish women and thought it was because of circ. It wasn't. It was becuase of the practice of the laws of family purity. (I can give an explanation if anyone is wildly interested, but suffice it to say the laws surround the menstrual woman and when she and her husband are permitted to engage in marital relations.)

The practice of circ stuck, though, unfortunately.

I watched a circ in the hospital long ago and nearly fainted. It was awful to watch .... I'm able to deal with a bris, though. It's a very different atmosphere.

Anyway, my $0.02.

Males with intact foreskin report a much higher level of sexual pleasure. Basically when males are circumcised, the foreskin, which houses millions of "pleasure" nerve endings, is taken away.

I would NEVER deprive any of my sons from his future sexual life because of what I am afraid might happen in a locker room.

BTW, Most locker rooms don't require you to get naked anymore anyways.

How can a man who has his foreskin compare his sexual experience and pleasure to one who does not?? He has never been on the other side of the fence, so how can he compare. It's totally subjective. That's like me saying lady partsl births hurt more than c-sections or vice versa. I have only had a c/s so i have NOTHING to compare it to. That's also as ridiculous as me saying that my orgasms are stronger than someone else's. How can I even compare...I can't because it is subjective there.

Here's a story for you: My grandfather was not circumcised. Around age 55 he had to get circumcised for phimosis. He claims that sex now is much better than it ever has been. He feels like he was cheated out of it all those years when he was uncircumcised. BTW...The only way I even know about this issue with granpa is because the circumcision was so traumatic for him at this age...it was over 6 weeks of recovery. Our family talks about everything under the sun.

I did choose to get my son circumcised. I still think its a personal choice. I used to be against circumcision when I was younger. Sometimes your views on things change as you age...or when you have children.

Well the data which I have read deals with men who are circumcised late in life. And yes, I read your story when you posted it the first time. I am not saying that they compare one persons sexual experience to another. Did I say that? No. Sorry if I inferred it, but went back and did not believe I did so.

Oh I completely agree with you. ANY elective surgery should be a completely personal choice! PERSONAL and made by the person who is to recieve the surgery. Don't think that I haven't looked at both sides, and my mom thinks it's ridiculous that I don't believe in it, because all of the boys in my family are circumcised, and I just accepted that. I don't know what made me look into it so deeply, but I did and I'm so glad I did.

One more thing....

To circumcise as a PREVENTATIVE measure... is as ridiculous of having a masectomy prophylactically when one doesn't have a hx of breast cancer in their family.
