What's the weirdest baby name?

Specialties Ob/Gyn Nursing Q/A

Hi, I was wondering about some of those weird names that you've probably encountered in L&D and PP. I remember when I had my maternity rotation a couple of weeks ago, one of the nurses said she remembers a patient that named her child Placenta. I couldn't believe it that some child has to live his life named after disgusting afterbirth!

good friend from high school.....4 boys...matthew, mark, luke, and john.

I just spent some time on a "most kissable baby" contest website (voting for a friend's baby). I just had to come here and tell you about a few names. The one that made me start jotting them down was named Summer Berry. Just too cute. Most of the ones I noticed were just very odd/unusual spellings of usual names Aalivya for instance. There was also Genesis, Gethsemane and Galilee, Grai, Ever, Cadenc, Paislie, Self and a beautiful little girl named Luke. There were a couple of Nevaeh's and for the Grey's Anatomy fans, an Addison Shepherd.

The other thing that caught my eye was the simplicity of picking out the common names, even with their spelling variations. There were 20 or more Addisons and Cadens with all kinds of spelling variations. Also my son's name was very popular...probably 2 dozen Ethans.

Anyway, just interesting to me.....

I had a class with a guy in college who told me his mother, Robin, got remarried to a man whose last name is Graves.

When I was a kid, I had an elderly male neighbor named "Precious Dahl."

I know of a nurse recruiter whose first name is "Honey." I can't stand calling her by her name when talking to her.

My husband works with a man from India, named Ma Boob.

They've tried calling him Bob, but the guy insists on being called Ma Boob.

Omg, we have a baby called mercedes right now! Comes from a REALLY bad area--- gonna be the only mercedes round there !

Mercedes is a common name where I live. I heard the car company was named after the founder's daughter.

Same here in NC, 33-weeker. No apostrophes. Don't know about hyphens, I'll have to ask.

On another note, my husband and I are thinking of having another child. Maybe, in a few years, possibly, lol.

Talking about names and for a boy "Malachi" came up. We already have a biblical named son, and we like the name. But when we brought it up at dinner with the extended family, we got "the look".....they say it sounds weird.

Took care of four babies last noc (and their four moms, too). Out of the four, one was a girl named Addison and a boy named Ethan.

Malachy--pronounced MAL-a-key--is very popular in Ireland. Frank McCourt who wrote Angela's Ashes has a brother named Malachy. I think the biblical Malachi is prounced MAL-a-kye.

Okay here is one for the books. I had a father come and ask me how I would spell a name...Well I spelled it as he pronounced it! Vernquez was the name. He said Vern was for his cellmate in prison and quez came from his last name. This is definitely one that I will never forget!!!:uhoh3:

LOL... Nothing like giving the kid something to live up to!!

What a great thread!! I love hearing all of these names, it is amazing what people come up with. In the NICU we have a lot of Neveah's (Heaven backwards) and Miracle's. While my mom was working as a field nurse for the PHD, she had a baby who's name was Female (rhymes with tamale). The family was from Mexico and saw it on some papers, thought the hospital named the baby and just went with it I guess.

What a coincidence! That's my baby's name! I'd been considering it and even had a few people from here vote on it! The choices were "Female", "Orangello" and "Lemonjello." When she was born, she was already named "Female" because that's what was on her hospital wristband. I thought it must be fate and therefore she's known as "Female." It even rhymes with Tamale! :trout:

Just so you know, that's an old urban legend. You can read about it at http://www.snopes.com/racial/language/names.asp

Let me go bang my head now after reading about baby "Female" for the umpteenth time... :p
