I would like to work with pregnant teens or teen moms. Does anyone know how to go about it? I live in Brevard County in FL. If anyone know anything please let me know.

Thanks

Hi, I went to a teen pregnancy school and we had a few public health nurses come to our school and also to our homes to give us info and check how we were doing. Those nurses really helped me, I usually spend about 10 minutes at my doctors at check up so i was able to ask these nurses a lot of questions and such.

It seems OB/GYN office would be you best option for RN work in your local area, however; many communites have privately funded centers that provide services to teen mothers who desire to keep their children, but lack resources and information due to many factors. I am not sure what your goals/desires are, or if you even care if you work with them in the capacity of an RN or as a counseler or case manager at one of these private centers. I don't know of what is in your local area, but here is a link to A Womans Friend center in Northern California that can give you an example of different options that are out there regarding services and counseling to pregnant teens. Who knows maybe they have a network of centers in other states you could ask about. Sorry I can't be of more help. www.awomansfriend.org

Do you have a Planned Parenthood clinic is your area? I have a friend who is an RN and besides doing routin blood tests and assits with physicals she does family planning and birth control planning with the clients. Alot of the clients there ARE teens and young adults. http://www.plannedparenthood.org/

I'm in public health, my program does lactation only, but some of the other programs that we offer work with mostly teen/young moms. My favorite is one where an RN goes into the home during the pregnancy and until the child is 2, every other week, and teach the mothers parenting/life skills.

Other than what has already been stated how about working in OB, labor/delivery, postpartum or nursery? I know I did and trust me, there were PLENTY of teens to work with. I also taught childbirth ed classes, started a special one for the teens since I saw they were intimidated by the older patients and taught parenting classes as well. I thought about starting a dad only class, but didn't have enough interest.

I worked with the health department frequently as well, though they had their own Welcome Home nurse that went to see all the new babies in the county, especially the teen and at risk moms.

Are you looking for a paying job working with pregnant teens, or just someplace to volunteer? Local WIC office, Dept of Health might be good places to start. Also maybe call the local high schools? I know Palm Bay High has such a high teen pregnancy rate that they have a nursery on site for children of students. Have you thought about being a school nurse?

Specializes in maternal child, public/community health.

I work in community health doing a home based program for pregnant/parenting teens. I love my job. I see them about twice a month for pregnancy (if we can get them that early) until the baby is one. If they start after the baby is born, we see them for a year (child can be any age - mom's age is the criteria). I do lots of education on pregnancy, nutrition, decreasing risks in pregnancy, baby care, life skills, etc. Part of my job is also teaching at public high schools' parenting classes or support groups. It is a very rewarding job (and some days sad to see the life situations these teens face).

I work for a non-profit public health organization but you might be able to do something similar through your public health department.

I would love to work L&D but noone will hire me b/c I don't have L&D experience. So I have no idea how to actually get the experience. I honestly don't care if it's a paying thing or not. I've contacted pregnancy resource inc in Melbourne and waiting to hear back if they need any volunteers. Palm Bay HS huh? I will give them a call and see if I can do anything there. Thanks for all your responses guys! :) I appreciate it.
