Placenta Previa

  1. I am a nsg student & have to give an oral presentation on placenta previa. I also have to have visual aids to go along with it. I have done all my research but I would appreciate any input ya'll might have since you are the pros.this is our guide.
    apply nsg process(dx,goal, intervention, rationale)
    client education
    lab tests/meds for dx
    medical mgmt
    sxs
I think I pretty much have it together but not sure what to do for a visual aid. Anything you can tell me about placenta previa would be helpful since I have no experience & only the written material to go by.THANKS!

Can you give a Power Point presentation? If so, you could import some illustrations of placenta previa. If you can't use Power Point, you could find a really good illustration and have it blown up to poster size at Kinkos. Good Luck

Hi there. My last pregnancy was hampered by a complete placenta previa. I hemorrhaged several times, and the last time the bleeding was so profuse and unstoppable that my son had to be taken by emergency C-section two months early. If you look back at my old posts here at allnurses, you can read a lot about my & my son's experience with this problem. I also created a two & a half minute (or so) video about the experience for a class presentation. If you would like it, I would be happy to send you a DVD copy of it. You would have my permission to use the video for your presentation if you find it suits your needs. Just send me a PM if you would like it.

hope its not to late of on medline.com (I think) there are some good illistrations about what a Placenta previa is. Also I'm just comming up with an idea as I speak. What about filling a balloon with Red colored sand you could move the balloon (the uterus) to show the many places the placenta (the sand) could attatch in relation to the cervix (the neck of the balloon) That is very visual and i think would get the point across.

Thankfully, most previas are diagnosed by ultrasound before they can cause trouble. It is of the utmost importance that anyone with a known previa be educated to seek treatment IMMEDIATELY with any bleeding. A copmplete previa requires a planned c/section. Even during a section, the surgeon has to work much faster to get the baby out and the placenta out as well, because of the greatly increased risk for bleeding (especially if the placenta is placed so that the surgeon has to cut directly into it).

There are no specific tests for this. Ultrasound will rule this in or out.

Management has been covered as has s+s.

Childbirth graphics has a poster (we use in childbirth classes) that shows a complete previa. It is just a placenta completely covering the cervical opening. You can draw that easily.

    Good luck.
