OUCH! My feet hurt!!

Hey there!

I currently work 12 hour shifts and at the end of the 12 hours my feet are killing me! I have worn orthotics since I was 17 for fallen arches, but it seems like in the past few years (and one child later) that my feet are taking quite a beating with all of the walking. After work I hobble around at home and it seems like they don't really get 100% better on my days off! I had to get a cortisone injection in my right foot between my 4th and 5th metatrsal today because my inflammation has gotten out of control recently! OK, I feel like I'm blabbing now, anyway, I think you get the idea...

My question is...

What do you all use as far as shoes? My podiatrist suggested New Balance, but I would love to hear from anyone that knows about some great supportive shoes.

Does anyone else out there experience any problems with their feet after being on their feet all day?

I will be looking forward to your input--thanks!

Ok, surfing the posts and found out that we have some true foot experts out there in the nurse entrepreneur sections--- I'll bet there are some great resources there.

Was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis several years ago... Unfortunately, had an HMO for insurance and it was one of the conditions they didn't cover. My doctor referred me to a website -- I think it was heelspurs.com -- through the years it has turned out to be the best information resource for my aching feet that I could have come across. I have been to lots of Md's and physical therapists. The information I got off of the heelspurs site was better and more thorough (including links to medical journals...) then all of the information I received from all of my providers put together. I'm still gimping along--some days pain free--some days not. But the important thing is.. I'm still able to work which is good since I've got a couple of decades left to go before I can retire. Anyway, don't know if the heelspurs site is stillout there, you might do a search for "heelspurs". It's loaded with information on foot pain from all sorts of causes. Good luck!

I can definitely empathize with this. I did a birth the other day in which I was on my feet for 17 hours straight (with the exception of a half hour break for lunch). I've had my New Balance shoes and they've worked OK for a while, but after a year I need to get a new pair of something. I've also heard good things about Birkenstocks, but I haven't seen them. When I picture Birkenstocks, I picture sandals, and hey, that wouldn't work with our dress code.

Um, I think we have someone with a foot fetish in our midst. :uhoh21: Achingfootman posts with that name, on his first post, on a feet thread. Then asks for pics. Kinda weird.

Specializes in NICU.

If you go to Birkenstock's website, they have "professional" shoes that have the same cork sole but they aren't exactly sandals. More like clogs - leather covers the entire foot and you can choose with or without a heelstrap. I hear excellent things about these and see lots of them at work.

After you find a pair of shoes, invest in the THorlo walking socks. They have really think padding on the sole. It makes a big difference. They are $$$ but are worth it. Have your doc prescribe them as medical device! LOL

I was suffering from horrible heel pain after work for a long time. Now I wear Ryka shoes and the pain is gone- good arch support and cushioning, slightly wider in the toes- they claim to be "made for women's feet". You might want to try them. I think a year is about all we're going to get out of a pair of shoes, considering the amount of abuse our feet take.
