OB myths and mis'conceptions'

I'll bet you OB nurses have heard 'em all! Let's share!

A couple of mine:

While helping his fairly fresh postpartum wife in the shower, she passed a huge clot. He comes out of the bathroom all wound up and in a dither, shouting for help, "SHE LOST HER LIVER!!"

Full term primip comes in with c/o "naval pain". Says it helped to rub it, but was concerned that this might tangle the babes umbilical cord...:roll

Gotta love 'em!

Or if horrid pt. that the whole unit dreads seeing CALLS, you pull her chart and LEAVE IT OUT. Thus ensuring she won't come in. The minute you put that chart back in the drawer, rest assured, she'll come in..............

Can all this be dismissed as superstition if it really works??

Good point, sbic........................

This mom was explaining to us that the baby was "dark" skinned from being mec. stained.

During C/S when doc flips uterus out onto belly to sew and irrigate, dad looks over sterile drape, and as he slowly falls to the floor says;" Oh My God...Twins!!

Also during pushing a woman yells out " I sure hope she looks like me and not you (dad) so she'll have a date for the prom!"

Same woman after 2 hours pushing, "We should have got a puppy instead!"

I am not a nurse yet, but I plan on going to school to be a L & D nurse (partly because of the awesome care I received when I had my 2 children). Anyway a good friend of mine recently had a baby and claims that "the baby came all the way out, but my dr. wasn't there so my nurse shoved the baby back in to wait for my dr. to deliver it." What's sad is that her husband claims that he saw the baby born and the nurse put it back.

Hmmm, so the Momma lies and the Poppa swears to it! And, of course, when they tell their story, there are some that will say, "Oh really?! That's awful!":rotfl:

That "twins" story is priceless!!!:roll :roll

First, I have to say I TRULY love this thread. I agree that it's hard to call it superstition if it's almost always on the mark!

I taught a childbirth class and heard alot of of "old wives tales" and I would ask for any "advice" they had rec'd. The endearing "mucus plug" always comes up. We've had 'em literally BRING IT IN FOR US TO SEE!!! just so we do believe it!!!! I always told my classess not to do that, we'd believe them!!! The men in the class always wanted to know if SEX would bring on labor, being married to a man, I always said, "yea, go for it, it can't hurt if your membranes are intact" to which the women would just give me one big DIRTY LOOK in unison!!!

How about takeing caster oil to induce labor?

We had one the other day that did this.

35 yo 28 weeker mind you, took caster oil so she could deliver before she got stretch makes. Turns out a friend of her told her that her baby would have to be on a vent but would be okay with in a few weeks "so it would be ready by the time she would have deliverd anyway"

She puked and puked and puked and pooped and pooped and pooped. dident deliver but was damn dehydrated and FTH went way down.

Seems like a case for DHS. I know you can't be prosecuted for being truly ignorant, but she had to have some idea this was a bad thing to do. I hope. Even scarier if she didn't!

i have a doctor tale actually....but the poor patient went with it anyway....she delivered this am with me....and it's really more sad than funny...upon admit, when we were doing her paperwork, she explained she was told at 20 weeks that with the bleeding she had been having, she aborted...or was never pregnant ( just pick a response would ya???) and was fine---good to go....

she was active at this point and we didn't mince words....just called the anesth for her epidural, and got her ready to deliver, but the sad thing is is she switched to a group where one of the doctor's gave a patient who was allergic to lidocaine local for her repair just over a week ago....she seized when the nurse tried to get her up in recovery and she went to ICU for 23 obs.

the doctor was quoted as saying " a little local won't hurt you"......

i don't really care for this doctor.....

oh boy....even as a new rn i see how it all works.....

and by the way....it's kinda funny to say the q word to see the veteran nurses balk...of course, i always get busy...that's ok! i have a hard enough time staying alert on NOC as it is!!
